many of you are applying to PhD programs right now. people often advise emailing profs at programs you're interested in. YMMV, but it can be a good thing to do. I received this email from a prospective student; sharing with permission because I think it's a good one.
If anything, this one is a little on the long side (i'd cut it by about 25-30%) but the key elements are good. clearly intros self and states intention, shares a small bit of background, gives a personal note that shows they actually understand my work, has a CV.
If the professor doesn't email you back, please don't take it any type of way or get discouraged.
the last paragraph of this email, which makes a very specific ask but also acknowledges in a considerate way that I might not be able to fulfill that ask, is just so good. so good!
