uni staff striking soon & most unis are gonna be affected by it

“I don’t pay 9k a year for lecturers to skive off”
“what about deadlines & assessments?”

well, since everyone who tweets about sleeping through 9ams is suddenly pressed about their education, lets do some learning
first, about what a strike actually is

people strike to show how important the work they do is, and how much everyone would struggle if they didn’t do their job - that’s the reason the strike is happening during such a busy academic period, to prove the value of the staff
this is why reason crossing the picket line (working during a strike) is so bad - it undermines the whole movement & devalues the work of ALL employees

Strikes are the last resort & due to anti-union laws, very difficult to stage - uni staff wouldn’t do it if they didn’t have to
ok, the bit you all care about - ££ aka what about my 9k?

YOU SHOULD BE ANGRY !!

but instead of tweeting abuse about lecturers, you should be writing to your uni’s vice-chancellor and asking THEM where all the cash is going - because it’s certainly not going to the staff
the strike has been called over a number of disputes, including: pensions, pay and workloads

again, this wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t important !!

frankly, it’s a disgrace that the extortionate cost of FE is somehow not covering reasonable working conditions for staff
it’s not just full-time lecturers striking it’s all members of @ucu (who have all the info u need about the details of the strike & how to support your uni’s staff) many of whom are on casual contracts - this means they can’t plan ahead and YOUR quality of teaching goes down
And remember, although most SUs are striking in solidarity, they will have measures in place & info to help you with what happens if you have an exam or deadline during the strike

They’ll also be able to advise you on how to show your support for the strike, & help change happen
in summary, yes it’s frustrating & inconvenient - but that’s the point!

channel your anger at those in charge, join picket lines & write to your vice-chancellor

I’d say rant over, but we all know I’ll rant until we lose freedom of speech

Solidarity forever, don’t be a scab x
