The MTA has flagged 9,000 vehicles in M15 and B44 bus lanes since rolling out bus-mounted cameras last month, MTA bus boss Craig Cipriano says.
Board member David Jones raises the question of what % of bus lane blockers are large corporations who can afford to pay the fines regardless of how high they go. Notes that parking tickets are the cost of doing business for a lot of these companies.
Cipriano says the MTA is working to get the data from its camera contractor to figure out who the frequent bus lane blockers are.
Cipriano says 1,500 vehicles evaded tickets because they were only parked in bus lanes for 1-4 minutes. That's a city policy carried over from before camera enforcement. Cipriano says he's working with the city to change the policy, which is enshrined in an MOU.
"We're on the case," Byford chimes in. The MTA wants 2 minutes, but NYC DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg thought that was too low, he says. Working to find a middle ground.

"I personally think 5 minutes is too long. I think we can probably settle on 3," Byford says.
"In other cities, you will have a cop behind you within 30 seconds," @FeinbergSarah says. She thinks even 2 minutes is too long.
