Michelle McGowan, gives insight into the growth of unregulated health research from independent researchers, citizen scientist, patient-directed researchers, and self experimenters. Many from these groups found traditional research mechanisms too slow in advancing health science.
. @wilbanks gives examples as new mobile apps can be used for daily tracking and storing of health data, such as tracking tremors for people with Parkinson's or heart rate data. However many apps can be unregulated from federal research regulations as anyone can create these apps.
Dr. Kyle Brothers shares the harms of unregulated health apps, such as, collecting erroneous heath information and providing incorrect diagnoses, as well as the potential disclosure of private health information and access to "authorized" mobile device data.
By collecting bad health data from unregulated health apps can lead to increase of stigma for certain populations, bad science, and the distribution of misinformation over social networks.
