PSU-Minny Thread on some plays and observations. After this I’m flushing it:
• Look at how far the DB is on KJ. Look at KJs route and where the line to gain is.
• That’s a hard throw and catch compared to what KJ could do with the ball.
This is the first KJ fade.

• Look at how the line/Friermuth crash down. Seems like a run scheme. Journey maybe doesn’t score, but it was only 2 yards needed. Seemed odd
This is the first KJ sweep.

• It gets sniffed out immediately. It’s also to the short side of the field.
• The DE releases immediately to the boundary. The QB keep was open and would’ve netted at the very least positive yardage. Clifford will get better at that.
This is the second KJ sweep.

• Even with the bobbled mesh and Journey not quite getting the lead block, KJ still beats everybody to the edge for 8 yards. He literally just needs space.
I’m not sure if the play design calls for Dotson to do this weird thing? But if he engages the block Journey is gone. Was nobody to that side past the LOS. Same play that he scored on earlier.

I can see why he wouldn’t want a block in the back but if he blocks at all it’s $
Let me build this moment for a second. It’s 3rd & long. A 5-point game. Based on how conservative Fleck had gotten, if they don’t get this he punts it away. This play leads to the last TD Minny scores.
• I don’t think everybody knew the play. One one side at the top of the screen, the CB and S are both backing up as if it’s quarters coverage. The bottom of the screen, TCF sat as if it was a 2-zone and the S is playing whatever crosses. The WR goes right past them.
This was the play of the game to me. The first TD was a bust. The second TD was a great call. On 3rd & 10 with a chance to get the ball back and take momentum, this play can’t happen if you’re a top 4 team. This is a young team type of play.
• Look at how wide open the WR in the middle of the screen would’ve been in the QB wasn’t on a 1-read.

• This is a blitz call and the CB is in man-press. In man-press, how is there not jam at the LOS? Especially knowing you’re on your own?
Before I dive into it. This is phenomenal coverage by a true freshman, and just a better play by the WR.

• There’s no jam at the LOS. If the WR is even grazed at the LOS it disrupts the timing. If the timing is disrupted the play isn’t made.
The CB has inside help. He should’ve played outside leverage. Look at how the CB at the top of the screen is playing his WR. Again, it seems as if the play didn’t get to everyone. This looks like Cover 3. One player is playing man coverage. How can that happen.
Morgan was on a lot of 1-reads. 1-reads beat a good pass rush. There wasn’t a jam at the LOS at all during the day. He had perfect timing the entire game and was able to throw to WRs running free.
Overall observations:

• The DBs actually aren’t an issue, it’s the style of play. Have to be much more physical in the passing game. The DBs have shown they’re physical enough in the run game, WRs running free in man-press shouldn’t be a thing.
• The offense is fine. They just literally need more space, which is there. I’m sure they saw that on tape.
•In the red zone sequences, I don’t think Friermuth got one target. That obviously can’t happen lmao.
