Hey! I’m a journalism student at Northwestern. I don’t write for the Daily (I wrote one article as a freshman and decided it wasn’t for me) but I have friends who do.

I think the discourse on here about *that* editorial is missing something really important.

THREAD:
The way I see it, that editorial was an attempt to better serve and empathize with marginalized communities voicing their displeasure.

You may take issue with that attempt. I take issue with some of it! But that’s not the point...
The point is that they tried to do something about it.

One of the principle shortcomings of mainstream journalism has been and still is its failure to understand marginalized communities.

I imagine that much of people’s resentment of the press stems from that failure.
My peers are attempting to grapple with an issue that professional newsrooms across the country are grappling with.

These students should not be excoriated for making that attempt.

Their editorial is not the journalistic apocalypse that many are making it out to be.
On the contrary, it should make us all hopeful for the journalism industry.

Because as I type this I can hear my roommates having a thoughtful discussion about the notion of objectivity.

This editorial is a good thing! It shows that we’re learning and we’re thinking.
It means journalism students have identified a fundamental problem with the media today and are searching for solutions.

My peers may not have found an optimal solution this time. That doesn’t mean you should slander them.

Trust the learning process. Take solace in it.
