Today we discussed the Guyanese diaspora who we met with them at an American Airlines conference in NYC for Destination: Guyana.

Let me tell you what you already know; the diaspora completely humiliated Guyana and Guyanese culture.
Yes, they're enthusiastic about Guyana. Yes, they had their flags and cheese roll. But they actually do not know anything about Guyana as a destination. They cannot accurately market the country they're so proudly representing.
In addition to this, they are the most reluctant to truly visit and experience Guyana. Most of them have this idea in their heads about what Guyana is and let me tell you, it's IMPOSSIBLE to change this idea.
They believe terrorism runs rampant in Guyana, similar to that of war torn African states.
They believe that it is unsafe to step out of a house or hotel in Georgetown much less to visit the Rupununi where the true beauty of Guyana lies.
They believe wildly incorrect stories.
When asked about anything outside of Georgetown, even something as popular as our Kaieteur, they cannot tell you anything. But there they were, flags out waving, folks songs out singing, and all generations in attendance.
I'm sorry, but you cannot be waving that flag around and be an ambassador of Guyana if you cannot tell people about the beauty of the country and be as enthusiastic in encouraging them to visit.
Guyana is more than just Georgetown. Guyana is more than just our dark past. Guyana is more than the crime rate. Guyana is more. It deserves to be properly represented; with more than Sybil's bakery, soca, folk songs, and flags.
After the conference, the diaspora in attendance were distraught.
They said, "I thought I know my country but I don't know anything!"
It's not that you don't know anything about the country, you just don't know the right things to properly represent the country.
At least at the end of the conference, that small population of the diaspora was educated on Guyana and what Guyana actually offers the world.
The Guyanese diaspora need to settle down with Twitter wars over their cultural identity & take a moment to learn more about Guyana than what they've been told. Learn about how you can be Guyana's biggest fan and ambassador. There's so much for ALL Guyanese to learn about Guyana
Guyanese living in Guyana hardly know about what their country offers. I'm asking that WE ALL take the time to learn more. Learn more before you attack each other. When we attack each other all we are doing is humiliating ourselves and our country.
Guyana is more. More than El Dorado rum. More than curry powder. More than pepper pot. More than fighting the generations. Do more for Guyana.
Until you can speak about Guyana, about the good, the bad, and the ugly, about the regions, the towns, the tourism, the crime, the politics, the culture, the history, and still encourage people to visit, you are not a good ambassador of the country.
Guyana was awarded THREE ecotourism awards this year. Guyana was named NUMBER ONE ECOTOURISM DESTINATION IN THE WORLD. And none of the diaspora knows why. Not many or any of the current natives know why. LEARN WHY.
The next time the diaspora and the nationals want to fight each other, I hope in the back of your minds you realize, you are making an absolute shame out of Guyana; a country struggling to escape Jim Jones, terrorism, and colonialism.
