For this week's edition of #SovietSpaceSundays, I'm going to do a short list of some of my favorite monolithic spaceflight monuments in the USSR!

1/
The first is the Vostok rocket in front of the Museum "Cosmic Samara."

This authentic Vostok rocket was installed in front of the museum in 2001 on the 40th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's historic flight.

It commemorates Samara's role in assembling the rocket.

2/
Next up is the Yuri Gagarin monument in Yuri Gagarin Square in Moscow.

The impressive 40 meter tall obelisk designed by Pavel Bondarenko depicts a Gagarin that seems to be launching himself toward the cosmos.

The monument is still maintained, especially on Cosmonautics Day.

3/
The Monument to the Conquerers of Space is one of the most famous spaceflight monuments, welcoming 300,000 visitors a year.

It's 107 meters tall—twice that of the Statue of Liberty—and is titanium plated to ward off corrosion. A frieze depicts important spaceflight figures.

4/
Although this monument didn't stand until 2008, the monument to Soviet space dog Laika is one of my favorites.

A statue of Laika is cradled in a rocket that morphs into a hand & is still commemorated with flowers by many Russians today.

5/
One of the more obscure monuments that I like is the Cosmonaut Monument in honor of Alexei Leonov, Yuri Romanenko & Aleksandr Viktorenko in Kaliningrad.

I just find the enormous simplicity of it quite striking.

6/
Close the village of Nizhnyaya Payva in Altai Krai is a monument erected in honor of Valentina Tereshkova—the first woman in space.

It was built on the site of her historic landing. Compared to the rigid stance of cosmonauts on other monuments, I love how fluid this looks.

7/
The monument to cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov, the first human to die during a spaceflight, is a striking memorial.

In one hand he holds aloft a book, symbolizing knowledge, and in his other hand, a hammer, the symbol of labor.

The monument is located in Nizhny Novgorod.

8/
Not all monuments are for human spaceflight. This statue in Moscow commemorates the flight of Sputnik—the first object to orbit the Earth!

It is being held aloft by the New Soviet Man.
