I think someone needs to say something coming from a place of the heart in reference to @hf_dreamcatcher . These women use the dream concept in their music and it is an appropriate name considering what they have done/ continue to do. https://twitter.com/kylam_official/status/1190837771989991424
It's obvious to me that whoever is starting this isn’t coming from within the fandom and therefore their words should be taken like a grain of salt. So let me, someone who actually is in both sides of the field with an university degree related to this, say something about this.
Their logo is a dream catcher, yes, a native American tool. That is used by people all over the world in their houses. Originally they were hung above childrens beds to protect them from bad dreams and evil spirits, and the spider web design allow only good dreams to pass through
THIS IS THEIR CONCEPT FROM DAY ONE!!!! They are literally writing their music and their videos about this!!! What are they to call themselves? Dream protectors of nightmare?
I went to a very Caucasian school and we built our own dreamcatchers in third grade. This is what happens in a world with information. It came with a lesson of where a dreamcatcher comes from. Culture spreads.
I have a university degree that literally breaks down into the spread of culture. DREAMCATCHER uses this in the same way my classroom did... and the same way that you sit there eating your cookies, or sushi, and nobody else is getting offended…. Because culture SPREADS
I think the problem here is that two, or three, people need to rally and speak on behalf of people who can’t and in this cancel culture call out anything that seems mildly inappropriate which can be a great thing but, like this, is sometimes a waste of time and harmful.
I'm okay with that. I’m okay with standing up for native culture, actually, as a native person I condone it and am thankful people are speaking out. But this whole thing is a mess created by people trying to spread ill-fitting misinformation.
I have never seen them tie anything back to Native American culture inappropriately. No running around with headgear and tomahawks like the football team:@Redskins whose names and fans shit all over native culture, legit there is a tomahawk chop dance, and yet they are still here
The day I see any of those women running around pretending to be some over-hyped, gross, version of a Native American will be the day I stand against them on . Until then please feel free to stan them because they deserve the world. And treat Insomnia like their family.
And because we are all like family I have to speak on their behalf with my Native voice and ask you, kindly, @kylam_official to reconsider your tweet. Its harmful to @hf_dreamcatcher whose fanbase isn't really in Korea.
It is likely that people saying this have 0 knowledge of @hf_dreamcatcher To them I say please do your research and listen to someone whose culture you are trying to give a voice to. Your heart is in the right place... but this is not really something to fight.
Thank You. A Native American Insomnia.
