It's kinda late to make a horror movies rec thread, i'm sorry ive been busy but here we go: (THREAD)
I know I keep talking about Lake Mungo but this movie is just too good. It's shot ala mockumentary and it's a dreadful take on death, loss, and the paranormal. 9/10 for me in this genre.
Kill List. A couple of assassins do job for an organization later revealed as a cult. The ending blew me away. There's also this one super scary scene in the tunnels. It's kind of a slow burn though so, def not for every one. 7/10
V/H/S 2 - Safe Haven. Another one about cults, but this one is more gory and fucking creepy and claustrophobic. A group of white filmmakers(?) journey to a supposed Indonesian religious group where everything is not as it seems. There's heavy gore and mass shooting here so beware
Another one from the V/H/S anthology, Siren. This one has a few trigger warnings like gang rape, but it's not very graphic. A couple of friends pick up this creepy chick assuming they could have her way with her but the situation turns around when she reveals her true nature.
The Ritual. This Netflix original is one of my recent favorites just because of the sheer tension and one of the best creature designs I've seen in modern horror movies. It touches a lot about guilt, mourning, and sacrifice. Also the inclusion of Nordic Mythology is a nice touch.
Another Netflix Original that i like: Apostle. (It's obvious by now that I really love folk horror). It's set in 17th-century England(?), where this one dude is looking for his sister who apparently joined a cultish religious group deep in a secluded island. tw: gore and DA
A mainstream horror movie I'd like to recommend is the first Insidious. James Wan's (SAW series, Aquaman) choice of direction in this film is absolutely amazing. I still tie the "tip toe by the window" song to that creepy dancing in the corner scene to this day.
Pulse (2001), is a japanese horror movie that's very depressing and dreadful. Albeit not scary per se, the tension and dread this movie brings plus the twist at the end makes it a great film to watch. There's also some nightmare inducing scenes here. tw: suicide/death
The Wailing (2016). This Korean film has been on my fave list since I watched it. It's a solid roller coaster ride and has a great twist. Slow burn, but worth it.
MAMA (2013). This creepy and unsettling movie about two young children raised by a supernatural creature is a solid watch, even with the subpar ending (in my opinion). It is a more emotional film about motherhood more than a horror movie but it's got its fair share of scares.
The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014). Albeit not as scary as you would expect, there are VERY creepy scenes here that could stay in your head for days. Try giving it a watch if you like it. t/w: snakes. lots of them.
The Hole in the Ground (2019). If you don't like children, you'd definitely hate them more here lmao. It's more creepy than scary, as with all the movies I usually like (I avoid cheap jumpscare-heavy movies like the plague.) This film is gorgeously shot though.
Event Horizon (1997). An oldie but a goodie. I consider this the epitome of Cosmic horror in film medium (until they make a good Lovecraft adaptation). Gory, Existential Crisis-inducing, and void of hope, this movie still holds up despite the lack of modern vfx.
The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015). Don't expect many scares here because there are virtually close to none. What this film offers though is great storytelling and tension, as long as you pay attention. Give it a try but it's not for everyone as it's very slow.
The Eye (2002), The original chinese one, not the american remake, is probably the first horror movie that scared me shitless when I was young. There's some terrifying scenes here but also a decent message at the end. tw: suicide.
As Above So Below (2014). This movie was claustrophobic as f u c k so be aware, your head may be spinning after watching it. Nonetheless, this was amazing despite some issues in its storytelling.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016). If you work in a morgue don't watch this HAHA. A father and son who works in a morgue investigate an unidentified female body. Not too much to say about this except for the unexpected reveal. +points the actress herself played the corpse.
btw only included ones that yall may not know already. Obviously, I love Hereditary and MIDSOMMAR but those are more or less mainstream already. Imma continue this later.
ah wait one more. I don't really like found footage style too much because I get dizzy but I do have a few favorites aside from Blair Witch Project.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, it's pretty great and scary. It's not my type of film but my friends seem to enjoy it so maybe try it
