footage of me trying to balance the stats/equipment in ikenfel after i re-designed all the damage formulas
new numbers are way better. the old ones scaled up way more than i wanted them to, and damage was reaching the 50-80 range by the end of the game. ew.
new formula is extremely sensitive to even small numbers late game, and damage barely reaches ~10 by the end game. numbers stay nice and tiny and clear now.
a big issue i have with a lot of RPGs is huge ugly numbers. like, what’s the difference between 4688 and 4640? it’s insignificant, it doesn’t matter. but the difference between 4 and 5 can mean life or death.
but the design problem one runs into is progression often makes the numbers scale up. thus a crafty and extremely specific damage formula has helped me dodge a lot of this stuff i don’t like. the growth is there, but the numbers stay nice and small.
imagine the first time, after using some power buff on your character, you deal more than 9 damage in ikenfell. you’ll be like DOUBLE DIGITS BABY AW YEAH
yet going from 9000 to 10000 feels super meh
