Here's the thing about #JeanLogan & its suspect beginnings: Once upon a time, #Wolverine was the ultimate loner. Caring only about himself & driven by selfish desire. Then he met the #XMen & it changed him - he became a protector of this new family & a believer in Xavier's dream.
Wolverine's first encounter with #JeanGrey was heavy with predator vibes. It's what he knew & the reason he was recruited. He was a hunter. He was also to act as a foil to Scott who repressed all of his emotions and wants, and placed duty above himself.
Open and unashamed, Logan made unwanted advances towards Jean. Comments, touches, kisses - there was a lot of this as the writers set up the love triangle between Scott, Jean, & Logan. Despite the conflict, Jean was deeply drawn to Wolverine from the very beginning. #xspoilers
Over the years Jean & Logan danced around each other. But Jean was deeply bound to #ScottSummers and ultimately chose to marry him. Although Logan never stopped loving Jean, he did come to respect her choice and put her needs above his own.
Once Jean married Scott, Logan worked hard to move on, even going as far as leaving the mansion. After returning he made it a point to protect Jean's happiness, and the life she had built with her new husband.
Even when Logan had devolved into a simile of his former self - this one thing remained true. He also protected Cable, Rachel, and Hope at great expense. Always fighting to find the good man within himself.
Logan even tried protecting Scott from making wrong choices. When Scott's marriage was falling apart, Logan tried multiple times to get Scott to open up to Jean, to take time for his marriage, & to focus on what really mattered, #jott.
Logan also warned Emma about coming between the Summers' marriage. When the opportunity came for him to help break it apart further, he showed more restraint than most ppl give him credit for. Lonely & ignored, Jean went looking for comfort from Wolverine that night in the woods.
But Logan knew that Scott & Jean were going through a tough moment, & that if something were to happen between Jean & him that night, it would only hurt her in the end. So Logan holds her like Scott used to, kisses her, and then does the hardest thing he's ever had to do -
he gives up the girl he loves and walks away. He tells her they'd never work, not because he believed it, but because he refused to give Jean an easy exit at her weakest. It is such a beautiful moment and one of self-sacrifice, the deepest sign of love.
Before Jean's death, she & Logan share some time on an asteroid hurling towards the sun. As she looses conciseness, Logan tells Jean that Scott still loves her. Despite all the pain & evidence to the contrary, on Logan's reassurance, Jean dies believing her husband loves her.
And in turn, Jean understands Logan at HIS most vulnerable. After he's left grasping at straws & questioning his identity, she tells him the truth about himself - the truth she's known since they first met. That he's a good man. Because HE tries to be - and that's the point.
Twitter likes to label #JeanLogan predatory, obsessive, one-sided etc., but that's incomplete & reductive. Their connection is genuine and powerful, & only at the beginning of what it will become. It's why they continue to find each other in time, in death, and in resurrection.
Anyway, I hope you give the relationship between Jean & Logan a shot! But even if you disagree with me, I hope you at least learned something new. ❤️👀
