All through university and in my career, flexibility has been a big part of my productivity.
At my startup and early at Twitter, while I was still coding, I frequently worked from home. Sometimes for entire days at a time and sometimes splitting my time during the day between home and the office.
As I began managing larger teams, I felt sucked into the office more and more, feeling like my physical presence was required.
At the same time I was feeling my productivity decrease.
I was in a state of constant meeting overload, running from one meeting to the next, sitting in meetings multi-tasking. I didn& #39;t have enough space to breathe, think and do deep work. I wanted to be spending more time and energy on the things that could help my team the most.
Not all of this was about where I chose to work. We have a lot to improve in terms of our meeting culture, communication tools and writing practices https://twitter.com/michaelmontano/status/1187697670451843080">https://twitter.com/michaelmo...
And we need to embrace asynchronous work https://twitter.com/michaelmontano/status/1186660395962044421">https://twitter.com/michaelmo...
Back to #WhyIWorkFromHome. In recent years, I& #39;ve become much more intentional about how I spend my time. Focusing on creating more space for deep work https://twitter.com/michaelmontano/status/1171797413851348997">https://twitter.com/michaelmo...
I began working from home Tuesday afternoons and Thursdays. Recently, I& #39;ve increased that to all day Tuesday and Thursday. I& #39;m more productive on those days and able to spend more time on deeper, more strategic work. #WhyIWorkFromHome
It’s also helped with building empathy for our distributed team, improving communications, running better meetings, and managing stress. #WhyIWorkFromHome
Working from home doesn& #39;t work for everyone. That’s ok. I still love being in the office three days a week, but for me the flexibility has been amazing.
As we seek to increase our impact, and build a more diverse and inclusive company, our team is going to keep breaking down barriers that exist and make it easier for anyone, anywhere to work @ Twitter, especially remotely. #WhyIWorkFromHome #TweepTour
