Part 3 Attack on Titan thread, giving my thoughts as I read through the series!
Here's the previous thread, in case you want to check out what I thought of chapters 42 to 52
https://twitter.com/yonatanhoresh/status/1178800672764022790?s=19
And part 1, with chapters 31-42.
Sadly, the first 30 chapters I have not done a thread on... https://twitter.com/yonatanhoresh/status/1176487251137761281?s=19
Well, not the sister I was expecting, but this works as well...
Only question is: how does Eren remember her? 🤨
Ahhh, I see.
Guess it's time to really develop the side characters, with all the character groundwork pretty much lain. I like that Isayama draws these parallels between Eren and Historia.
And like I said here https://twitter.com/yonatanhoresh/status/1178021799751233536?s=19
Historia needs Ymir a lot more than it seems at first. She lacks direction and opposition without her, but not from Levi or political figures: from someone who really knows her.
Oooh!!! That hits right in the realism!!
Man, those little details... Love 'em!
This is in regards to Armin being pretty much harassed, btw
DAMN!!
The king has some serious DRIP
Okay, I'm REALLY warming up to Isayama's sense of humour 🤣😂🤣😂💀☠️💀
2000 years you say? 👀
Seriously, this can't be a coincidence. "To You, 2000 Years Ago" HAS to mean something, and the fact that the royal bloodline existed for that long should be an immediate red light.
Man, even all.those years ago, Sannes and his blond partner were being sons of bitches.
Good to know.
Damn, it really is all coming together https://twitter.com/yonatanhoresh/status/1187759490038407168?s=19
You can really feel the series slowly shifting to become more character driven. Now that we know it is, and has always been, humans vs humans, Isayama does an amazing job showing us the sides of every human. Dimo Reeves, Nile of the MPB, even this mf Sannes...
Btw, I fucking felt that...
I was hoping we would get to study more sides of Levi's character, and Isayama delivered big time
A good technique for keeping your audience invested: subtly sneak in pieces of dialogue or actions to suggest a certain unexpected outcome. If done correctly, and the story has shown to be unpredictable before, your audience will stay guessing until the answer is revealed.
It's been brought up multiple times throughout this arc and the last that our protagonists may be in the wrong.
Isayama knows what he's doing
On this particular reveal I was spoiled, I know Mikasa and Levi are cousins...
Too bad. But it doesn't seem like they know it.
Goddamn, this page is powerful.
Captain Ackerman's not only revealed to be an Ackerman in the most casual way possible, but the sense of despair is highlighted from all angles:
First, the captain towering over everyone and everything, unbothered by the man dying at his feet.
His son's crying behind a tree, unae to act, and we can just see Eren being lifted, helpless and captured, with the woman's massage telling us he can't even use the knives.
Page composition like this, where each detail enhances a the other details, is rarely seen. It's hard to achieve, but this one brings it to near perfection.
Also, this sort of connects all of these dots, all the way back in chapter 20.
Now we know that Erwin was always suspecting of an inside job, so his comment to Eren, and his operation in the Titan Forest, are much clearer now.
I love these kinds of things.
IS THIS IT? 👀

Well, it's... Not what I expected...
Aight, so I've been explained Hange's line of logic here, which for me seemed like an impossible leap.
Want to thank @lisbhara and @phantom108MW3 for helping me understand this, without spoiling.
They've both been nothing but supportive of this little readthrough I'm doing...
...and I can't thank them enough, as well as anyone else who's been liking, RTing. I really appreciate it, you're all amazing!
Problem is, if they needed Eren's powers and were prepared to use just any titan to get them, that means Reiss would have to eat THAT titan.
Which means he doesn't care about eating his own people.
Which means why not eat Reiner/Bertolt/Annie? (1/2)
And another thing. This kind of disproves the theory that there're people with the coordinate on the other side, because that's the only thing Reiss would need Eren for, considering he doesn't mind eating his own people.
And if there WAS someone with the coordinate... (2/3)
...on Reiss's side, why wouldn't he eat them?
Clearly we're still lacking in information, but who cares.
You don't say 👀

He just tingles my "TRAITOR!!!" senses so much!
He appears *just* enough that he can be considered a side character, but not quite enough that Isayama wants to draw too much attention.
If I get spoiled on this, it'll be the greatest thefts of enjoyment in the history of spoilers.
Death flags every where
It's very lowkey but Jean's character development has been amazing so far.
I just hope it continues and he doesn't remain stagnant
Also I hope this little rebellion within the Survey Corps's rebellion won't just be undone by the next Erwin speech. This needs to be a big milestone for these characters, especially Sasha and Connie, who are the least developed (also Mikasa is sort of one note so far).
That Nifa textbox is honestly amazing... It's always super impressive when a mangaka can convey a feeling to the reader before the moment appears. In this case it's the dread.
Cue flashback to original squad Levi in 3, 2, 1...
It's a really neat touch that Levi still kills by striking the nape of the neck, even if it's humans
Honestly, this entire fight's been legendary so far, one of the best action pieces in the series. The way he defeated Kenny with the wine bottle's reflection, the choreography...
Masterful.
Wait, I just got something!!
I just figured out why only the top 10 ranking cadets from the training corps can become MPs!!!
Of course the government would want the most talented people on their side! The system makes perfect sense now!
And since there's a small amount...
...they're easier to control and, if there are any defiances, eliminate!
Isayama, you fucking troll... Moving back to Eren after this?!
Man, people said heads were gonna start rolling this arc, but Jean???
Anyway, usually I wouldn't have believed it, but the series's reputation and the hat flying gives me doubt.
Isayama knows his way round the cliches
So... Why is Rod Reiss not a titan? The way Hange phrased it, and it could just be a translation problem, but she said "Rod Reiss wants to eat Eren". So I thought he'd been accidentally turned into a titan... But if he's human, it could be that ANYONE eating a...
...titan shifter would become one themselves, not just mindless titans.
Also, this whole "turning titans into titan shifters thing" explains why the titans are so eager to gobble Reiner, Bertolt and Ymir here
She's probably having some tea with the king or something lmao.
Reiner and Bertolt had kind of a shocked expression on their faces, but when you consider they probably know the MPs won't touch her, it both makes sense that they'd leave her behind, and it doesn't because...
...they're still surprised.
IS THIS HAPPENING BECAUSE JEAN DIED OR BECAUSE ARMIN KILLED SOMEONE I NEED TO KNOW
Where.
WHERE HE AT.
Motherfucking SHIT Isayama, why the hell would you do this to me!!!
Also, YES. YES!!!
This is exactly what I wanted to happen last arc! Eren gets kidnapped? Develop Mikasa and Armin's friendship! So glad Isayama did it!
It's never a bad time to mention the fact that I really really like Armin and Jean's relationship. It's never stated outright that they're friends, but they clearly care for each other.
Oh, man! I'm sensing that end of chapter death shock...
So I was *sort of* right about Pixis...?
I mean, he doesn't seem to have on the MPs' side all along, but he doesn't cooperate with the Survey Corps either...
Eh, I'll take it.
EXCUSE...!!!
ME
Well, this is certainly much better than an attack at random.
"it" huh?
Btw, wtf is up with Historia and Eren?
Aight, never mind.
Still proud of myself for sticking to this theory for 60 chapters.
This man dead?
He alive, nvm.
Not gonna lie, I hoped this situation would remain longer. It was a really interesting dynamic.
But if I know anything about Isayama...
This shit is far from over.
And this is it right here: THIS is the page that perfectly encompasses everything great about this first half of the arc.
Everyone worked from all angles: the press, the military, the people: and in the end, all of this amazing character work that Isayama planted...
...throughut these 11 chapters: the MPs, the newspaper employees, the Reeves company, Hitch and Marlowe, the people of Trost, Nile and Pixis...
It all paid off. Honestly, this has been some of the best and most efficient balance of character writing and plot progression...
...I've ever seen. If this is how the arc progresses? And the rest of the series? I'm in for a fucking treat, man.
Uprising arc has been nothing short of masterful.
And with me finishing chapter 61, I'm exactly halfway through what currently is Attack on Titan (122 chapters).
How do I describe this first half?
I made 4 goddamn threads on it, you twats, go read them!
I'm glad we're taking the time to see the effects of a revolution on the people.
So Zackly is lowkey kind of a sadist...
Interesting.
5 children, huh..I think I know who this black-haired girl is...👀
That is, Rod Reiss murdered his entire family because they knew too much? Got it👍
But... Eren wasn't a titan...
Unless humans who eat titan shifters can also steal their powers, in which case it does make sense that Rod isn't a titan...
https://twitter.com/yonatanhoresh/status/1189549789903499264?s=19
As opposed to what I said here
No Mikasa?
Ouch.
Theory time!
If a human or a titan eat a titan shifter, they gain some of their memories. This could be where Eren's black-haired girl flashback came from!
And it could be why he remembers this place...
OK, so I'm guessing he took the power from the black haired girl? In that case, it makes perfect sense that Frieda is her.
WHAT.
HUH.
All right, I don't even know what to fucking say at this point!!!!
So both Eren and Historia killed their families as titans?
Could it be Rod and Grisha made some kind of agreement to experiment?
And if Grisha is dead, something doesn't add up, hold on...
Aight, first of all, this fucking volume cover
Nah, everything adds up, I'm just a fucking moron
Aight, so I've found it...
The flashback that I remembered from the anime.
(thanks @lisbhara for the help).
Now I feel really stupid....
Grisha straight up told Eren why he injected him with the power and why he couldn't tell him about the basement...
This bums me the fuck out because it means that like a third of my theorising thread...
...is now useless.
And it wasn't because of something that was proved or disproved now.
It was because of something I'd read *before* writing that theory.
Ugh, how stupid can a person get????
I'll have to reread that theory, see if there's still anything plausible about it...
I was REALLY fucking excited for it, too.
But never mind! I have something else...
https://twitter.com/yonatanhoresh/status/1190275708020514816?s=19
This is that something else
Wait, what?
They weren't killed by Historia?!
No, no, this man is talking out of his ass. Eren knows knows what really happened.
So *that's* why Eren had Frieda's memories...
So I was right about her being a titan shifter, but wrong about Historia eating her. This actually makes slightly more sense, because that'd explain why Eren has Frieda's memories...
It still doesn't explain why he doesn't have...
...his father's memories though.
Atta boy...?
This is the continuation and ending to this part of the AoT readthrough, which for some reason can't be found anywhere... https://twitter.com/yonatanhoresh/status/1190589628669136897?s=19
