1/ Sanctions are supposed to be imposed by the UN after being voted on by the UN Security Council. So US/UK actually tried that several times in the security council. It was vetoed by China/Russia. Then Bush/Blair viewed themselves as bullies in 2000s & pushed them anyway.
2/ UN Charter & spirit requires that member countries be viewed as sovereign & their territorial integrity be respected. So sanctions process should in international law be decided on by the UN. But Bush/Blair operated outside international law. So the sanctions are ILLEGAL.
3/ They didn’t stop trying to still bring Zim over to UN Security Council to sanitize the ILLEGAL sanctions. They kept trying till 2008. But Mugabe’s international relations machine was so good.
