Because of how dry Joburg is & lack of rivers, people are not supposed to be living in Joburg. Since food isn’t grown here, it has a greater impact on the environment when it comes to transportation & pesticides to preserve the food grown outside #Future50Foods

Almonds are not sustainable, especially when you are changing from Milk to almond milk. Growing just one almond take up more than 3 liters of water. South Africa has indigenous beans & nuts which are used for milk alternatives which are better #Future50Foods
Tubers such as “Amadumbe” are great for treating diseases such as diabetes & for gut health. #Future50Foods

Siyakhana started in 2005 by Wits & professor Rudolph. They took land that was being used by city parks as a dumping yard to turn it into a garden. The project started with feeding local communities & schools for free #Future50Foods
To help with skills development, you can intern here! They now sell produce to local schools as a means to take care of the land. City parks has allocated them more land to plant more crops. #Future50foods
Now Siyakhana provides work for the unemployed & makes food for their employees so no one ever sleeps or works hungry. #Future50Foods
Siyakhana is also looking for sustainable means of packaging their food & currently looking for volunteers to help with marketing. Their shop for the public is open Monday to Sunday! #Future50Foods
