I must say he was overrated
I am giving you reasons here why he was overrated and it was hypocrisy to say him as bapu.
Gandhi said in public that partition would only take place on his body but

But he used to take support of "Aabha" and "Manu" even while he was questioned on his naked sleeping with them he said he is doing experiments on his brahmacharya, a man can also perform this with his wife kasturba but he need young girls.

As nehru gandhi was also true supporter of muslims and hater of hindus on 06/08/1946 he said on a public platform not to fight with muslims but to sacrifice against muslim league also killings of hindus by muslims he said as great work of allah followers.

After independence when hindu refugee had taken place in mosques and when muslim objected gandhi forced them to vacate that place.

After partition gandhi told hindus to show love for muslims by giving example of kashmir but surprisingly he told hari singh to leave the place and settle in kashi as muslim majority was there but he supported Nizam of hyderabad where hindus were in majority.

As chatrapati maharaj and maharana pratap fought against muslim Invaders he also said them as misguided nationalists .

It was gandhi who did not say any word to pakistan while it attacked on india in october 1948 but he said indian government to give 55 crores rupee as compensation

He opposed Imperialism in India but supported in South Africa,

He was against untouchability but not against caste system swami shraddhanand wrote many times to him for removal of caste system but ego matters for gandhi accidently when he was killed by abdul gandhi said the killer as his brother and after 2 year the killer was made free.

So this is the sample of your Father of nation and now decide whether his character was overrated or underrated.
