I was really struck by this from @MrNishKumar talking to @sadia_azmats_ and @meMontyMonts on #nocountryforyoungwomen (26th march this year): (1/7)
Nish was talking about people failing to recognise him, randomly assigning him the name of another brown skinned comedian or just giving him a & #39;generic& #39; name (2/7)
"Am I making a big deal out of this ? Maybe Iâm over-reacting and then you meet the other person [whose name was assigned to you] and they are equally angry and youâre like & #39;oh no it& #39;s fine [to be angry]& #39; â (3/7)
"I think the problem is and the thing that I tried to articulate in that article was that... when people talk about micro aggressions â if we broadly felt that society was moving in a more progressive direction we would not be stung by micro aggressions I donât think." (4/7)
"The truth is that a micro aggression is harder to shake off when you are dealing with a macro aggression such as Brexit and when youâre dealing with the kind of racialised tone of the Leave campaign" (5/7)
"...and when youâre dealing with the fact the country ultimately (+ I know people who voted leave have complex reasons) ... sided with the guy in front of the âBreaking Pointâ poster & that to me felt like a macro aggression, for want of a better term" (6/7)
"And so in the atmosphere where the country has sided with that it is so much harder to go âwell itâs probably fine that the guy called me Romesh, itâs probably fine that they called me Nish Patelâ.â (7/7)
