Wonyinghi: Our mother
Teme arau: she who creates
Ziba arau: she who gives birth
Igina-arau/ogbono-arau/suoarau: creatress who dwells in the firmament.
The feminine conception of God among the ijaw is reflective of the matrilineal system of the Ijaw society.
Temearau is God who lives in the sky: she is woman because it is the woman who bears & produces.
Religiously, women in Ijaw communities are given significant roles to play because of the concept of God being mother. Some popular communal cults have women as their chief priestesses
In some Ijaw communities eg Nembe, decent is mainly reckoned through the mother's lineage. It should be noted, however that the matrilineal descent system does not place women above men in public affairs
