I have a few minutes, so here is the beginning of my update thread.
Eastern black walnut, this tree is the largest specimen of black walnut I have on my property. It has grown significantly this year, it’s the first year I’ve found more than 5 or 6 nuts on the ground.

Keeping the brush cleared out, and the ground mowed seemed to help.
When I first bought the property, I didn’t know this tree existed, the sea of brush around it was so thick, I had to crawl through it just to get into the property.
One of the few specimens on my property I’m keeping. I’m creating a system here that provides nourishment to me and my family in all regards. Physical, intellectual, spiritual, etc...
Each tree, or large shrub, is going to be an island, surrounded by smaller plants and underpinned by a selected fungus.
To the left of the walnut you can see a wooden frame.

Leaning against it are my Shiitake logs. I started them in the spring, so far no flushes.
Still holding out hope, maybe next year.
Here’s some pics I took last night while raking leaves.
From the tractor back was a wall impenetrable brush.
Honeysuckle, multiflora, buckthorn, scrub apple, you name it.
Obviously still have a long way to go, but I’m undeterred.
In the center you can see a small hawthorn, the future center of one of my ‘islands’.
I need to drop the ash trees surrounding it before I can begin the process.
Collection of shrubs to plant, 7 azaleas, 4 holly, still have to get some lowbush blueberries for this spot.
Tulips!! At least that’s what planted under this young maple.
The mesh is there to deter the very eager squirrels on my property.
The photo was taken a few weeks ago. Since then I’ve hit up all the clrearance sales at the local nurseries, now have about 500 bulbs to plant.
The weather has not been cooperating.
Haven’t added to this thread in a while, it’s been a strange spring, snow at the beginning of May, August weather at the end.
