Short thread on the “new” math cause I’m tired of the lack of understanding.
Y’all: I wish they’d teach it the old way.
Me:
There’s some research to suggest traditional algorithms are harmful to kids. Why? Because it doesn’t help a kid build number sense.
Most number operations in elementary math are based on composition/decomposition ie making numbers friendly for kids. Trust me it’s helpful.
So what if a kid uses decomposition to solve a problem? So what if a kid draws a model to solve a problem? They are building their own understanding of math.
Eventually they will get to those traditional algorithms by 6th grade. Be patient. It’s unnecessary in those early grades.
Tons of kids struggle with traditional algorithm for multiplication...why? Fluency issues, errors when regrouping, placeholder errors...
In the meantime... watch kids make sense of their math using place value strategies and models...they will develop better number sense.
I did a number talk in a 4th grade math class today. We got to our last number string: 5 * 112....and kids solved it right away without paper and pencil.
Why did they solve it correctly? They use things like (5 * 100) + (5 * 12) or (5 * 100) + (5 * 10) + (5 * 2).
So while you’re at home helping your child or family member, don’t try to change things by saying: “Let me show you this way...”
Also teachers, willingly share strategies with families.
Bye.
