After interviewing a few applicants, I wanted to share some interview tips for hematology/oncology fellowship applicants (although might be relevant for other subspecialties too)
Feel free to share & comment

Your body & your mouth need to give the same message.

Body needs to show the same interest as your words. Look at interviewer's eyes at all times, engage in interview.
How to improve this? Practice with friend or mirror. This is crucial and will engage interviewer more.

Tell me who you are but also tell me who you want to be.

Describe the career that you want: translational, lab, or just seeing patients. This helps to understand application & tailor interview accordingly. You can discuss how program can help you to achieve those goals.
3/11
Be yourself.

Do not lie about who you are. Just be honest, tell me your achievements, strengths & weaknesses. Do not try to be someone else. Remember each institution may be looking for different applicants, and you might be the one, not the one you pretending to be.

4/11
Be ready to support your described accomplishments.

If you say that you were the PI of a study, be ready to answer questions about design, stats plan, and results.

if you performed mouse experiments, you d better know how to medications were given to mice.

5/11
Be Unique.

Several applications: ⬆️usmle scores, passion for hem/onc, like research, like onc after a patient during residency.
But each of you is unique. What makes you stand out?Someone recently told me how having a family restaurant helped to guide her oncology career.
6/11
Do not lie

This is the worse mistake during an interview. If you tell me that you like soccer, you can not say that you do not who “Messi” is … @teammessi
If you like tennis, you'd better know about Roger Federer & Rafa Nadal etc. @rogerfederer @RafaelNadal

7/11
Explain weaknesses described in your CV.

This is the time for you to explain weak areas. My friend was going through divorce before step1, he failed it. He then took the test again & obtained a great score. USLME transcript does not allow you to explain these things
8/11
Why are we a good match?

Tell me what attracts you for fellowship here. Do you have a mentor here? Is there a researcher in a specific area that you want to work with? Do you know any of attendings here? Do you any of fellows here?
Why are we a perfect match?
9/11
Ask questions.
Asking questions will help you to make a better decision but will also show that you are interested in the program. There will always be a question to be asked, and if you can not think of any, it might be a sign that the place did not meet your expectations

10/11
Pace your interview.

Interviews are short, please time your interview and make sure you discuss relevant points during interview. If not asked, bring up things that enhance your application.
Try to lead the interview yourself!
