Today, the #AEAClimateSurvey was released, and what I am curious to know is why ANYONE who looks like me should enter the economics profession and how those who did survived.

Shoutout to @drlisadcook @DivEQ @LeeBadgett @Econ_Sandy Marianne Bertand and others. A thread/
Let's begin with the big picture: Women in economics overwhelmingly (>60%) feel undervalued, underestimated, and disrespected.

The percentage of men who feel this way barely reaches 50%. Surprisingly, non-white women are more satisfied than whites, but nonwhite≠URM so..🤷🏿‍♀️. 2/
Black economists also feel discriminated against, undervalued, and threatened by certain work environments.

And there is a 56 percentage point difference between Blacks and non-Blacks on feeling that their respective race/ethnicity is respected. FIFTY SIX. Nonwhite≠URM.🙃 3/
Black women lie at the intersection of these two groups so you can only *imagine* our experience. Numbers don't lie.

Black [and Latinx] women have to take on more measures on avg to protect themselves from racism and sexism as compared to other groups regardless of gender. 4/
More data shows that nearly a third of Black women report that they have experienced discrimination in promotion and almost half report discrimination in pay.

The numbers are higher for Latinx. Both are in accordance to the nationwide pay gap for Black and Latinx women. 5/
You mean to tell me that almost 100 years after Sadie T.M. Alexander got her PhD, the economics profession still remains an unwelcoming place for BW. That we continued to be undermined at every level of the pipeline.100 years and no change. Like make this make sense.

6/
And don't stop at RT @drlisadcook, @DarrickHamilton, @RhondaVSharpe, or @TrevonDLogan when the lack of BW concerns you. Become an ally. Make an effort to support sustainably & tangibly.
