in this essay, i will compare and contrast the use of color symbolism in the Super M teasers and how they borrow the color scheme from the Matrix movie. i just have a lot of observations
the four main colors in each teasers are: red, green, blue, and white. it coincides with the way color is represented on electronic screens also known as the RGB model. in this model, color mixing follows Additive property where the culmination of color equals white
it's interesting bc these colors come together to create a harmonious white, much like each member together creates a new supergroup. however, the super m teasers use these colors the same way the matrix movie uses them, which demonstrates their intention behind the name
these colors symbolize different levels of existence. the wachowski sis chose green to represent the matrix world bc it references the green tint on old computer screens. it symbolizes the mind + the bending of perception specifically. blue symbolizes reality + the physical body
red is both corruption and an awakening, i.e. red pill + matrix pods. white is purity and a mysterious source of everything. in the teasers, it's unclear whether white is the starting or ending point but the structure of each non-taemin teaser is roughly the same.
a main motif of the matrix is to challenge ur perceptions and introduce the several levels of metaphysical realities. the teasers incorporates this as well. the structure ROUGHLY follows the progression of Intro (purity/reality)→Matrix→Outro (breakdown of preception).
the super m name refers to both matrix and master. presumably taemin is the master as he is the one we see ascending to the top of the steps. at the start of his vid, he's shown in the awakening stages but still wearing blue to show his tie to reality
the duotone shows a starting immersion into the matrix. it isn't until the end where he finally sheds his blue coat and fully accepts the matrix. his scene is now saturated in green. his body breaks the boundaries of a previous reality
as The Chosen One he has direct parallels w other members. there isn't anything to suggest that he's doing it out of malice. he does draw a similarity to the morpheus role who serves to show others the truth. in mythos, morpheus is also the god of dreams + reality manipulation
other points of interest: bbh's teaser is the most technology-based. his opens with a dark room that slowly illuminates like a computer booting up. like most others, bbh starts off wearing a white item (minus kai, and taemin's whose white item appears at the end of his teaser)
the matrix featured a lot of reflections as a way to challenge perception. in both lucas and mark's teasers, they see themselves through mirrors. they see an alternate version of themselves and it propels them into the matrix realm to embody that version
the duotone scenes of red and blue are prolific across the board. the most notable is taeyong's where this shows his Awakened state destroying the blue-lit version of himself to show the rejection of a world filled with ignorance and illusions
exo + nct/wayv's teasers also share their own unique parallels. exo's teasers used elements of their superpowers while honoring their legacy. bbh's featured his light power + a set reminiscent of What is Love's mv. kai's re-introduced his confessions dance and teleportation power
nct and wayv members all involved dopplegagners of themselves. it could be common to see oneself in a dream or progress of astral projecting. (tbhly i'm sorta reaching with that one)
