documentary narrator: eventually, these pagan tribes converted to christianity
me, from the couch: BOOOOOOOOOOO
documentary narrator: the vikings left with precious booty
me, from the couch: AYYYYYYY YEAH THEY DID, BUD
here's the thing, i get that there's a thirty year difference between the two supposedly female skeletons (80 & 50) but if the older was a man & the younger was a woman, archaeologists would immediately assume a relationship. but with same sex, they assume royal/servant
narrator: there was only one burial chamber for these two women
me: oh my god there was only one burial chamber
"The connection between the two women is unclear." JUST GALS BEING PALS IN THE AFTERLIFE http://irisharchaeology.ie/2012/09/the-oseberg-viking-ship-burial/
first of all, fucking ban straight people from archaeology if they're not going to god damn broaden their line of thinking. secondly, i wanna go to oslo and see the gay viking burial ship
a;lkdflka the researcher in this article is like "well, they were BOTH wealthy so it can't be a royal and her slave so they must be mother and daughter" https://www.nrk.no/viten/dronning-asa-av-oseberg-1.3405117
this very long PDF describes how the burial mounds were open soon after the bodies were laid to rest. how was it not a hypothesis that maybe one women died first & then the other wished to be buried with her??? https://www.khm.uio.no/tema/utstillingsarkiv/levd-liv/plakater.pdf
the problem with cold-calling Viking historians & asking why no one has considered a queer couple for the Oseberg ship is that I’d feel like a dumbass. I’m NOT a Viking historian & my lack of knowledge could mean there’s an obvious answer I’m missing. Or maybe that’s BS! Idk!
Can you tell this has been keeping me up at night???
If anyone knows any Viking scholars who would be willing to answer a couple questions ab the culture, especially if they’re queer, I’d really appreciate it so I can suss this out a bit. Even if I can be pointed more in the right direction past the Great Courses & my own googling
here's the thing- straight white male archaeologists can just GUESS SHIT & it ends up in textbooks. but when ANYONE ELSE DOES IT, i get people in my mentions & dms all WELL WE DON'T HAVE THE EVIDENCE. THE CULTURE. WHO COULD SAY? WE DON'T WANT TO PRESUME. bitch, i'm here presuming
