The first few years of combat saw reports of significantly high head wounds of Richtschützen using Mgs in the Schwere (Heavy) role & AFV crewman in half-tracks, tanks & SP AT guns.
A solution was required to address this

So periscope, soft-mounted half-track & tank/SP AT gun attachments were developed & implemented to mitigate the loss of highly-trained men.
For the Schwere Mg role, the Vorsatzfernrohr Mg Zieleinrichtung was issued.
This lowered the profile of the Richtschützen.

For half-tracks, an internal Lafette mount used to sight, traverse & fire the Mg was issued. See pics 1-3.
Late War, a remote controlled ‘JgPz 38(t)’ mount was issued. This was eventually only fitted to this AFV & StuGs.
I could not locate photo evidence of this item.

It seems the Bundeswehr has continued with this casualty reducing equipment. https://twitter.com/history1history/status/1169500858763161600?s=21
