Dwarka is one of the 7 holy cities in India. It literally means “Gateway to the Supreme” or “City of gates.” The divine architect, Vishwakarma himself built it. It is one of the foremost Chardhams, 4 sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites and one of the Sapta Puri.
It's a sacred city bcs Lord Krishna spent most of his time during his appearance on earth around 5000 yrs ago.
It's identified with Dwarka Kingdom, the ancient kingdom of Lord Krishna. It has also been referred to throughout its history as "Mokshapuri", "Dwarkamati" "Dwarkavati".
It is mentioned in the ancient prehistoric epic period of the Mahabharata along with other important Hindu texts such as the Vishnu Purana, Bhagvada Purana and Skanda Purana. According to legend, Lord Krishna settled here after he defeated and killed his uncle Kansa at Mathura.
He spent a significant amount of his time at Dwarka to build his new kingdom. Every year on the auspicious eve of Janmashtami, devotees gather at Dwarka to participate in the elaborate festivities commemorating Lord Krishna’s divine presence in the universe.
In Vrindavan, Lord Krishna lived as simple cowherd boy, but in Dwarka he lived as a wealthy prince.
Srila Prabhupada writes: “The heavenly planets are more celebrated than the earth. But the earth has outshined the heavenly planets bcs of Dwarka, where Lord Krishna ruled as king.
Vrindavan, Mathura & Dwarka are more splendorous than the famous planets in the universe. These places are perpetually sanctified bcs whenever the Lord descends on earth, he displays his transcendental activities in these 3 places. They're perpetually the holy lands of the Lord"
After Lord Krishna left his physical form, the Yadus killed each other in a drunken fight and as a result of a curse, the entire city of Dwarka submerged under sea. Scientists maintain that ancient Indian civilization goes back 4 to 5000 years.
Yet the ruins below Gulf of Cambay go back at least 9000 years, i.e. to the time when the area submerged under water.
This means that the city must have existed before the flooding, 9000 years ago! The ruins have been proclaimed the remains of Lord Krishna's lost city of Dwarka.
It is said that without the will of the Supreme Lord, not a blade of grass can move. One can approach a holy place of pilgrimage only by his mercy. The vibrations of a holy place are sanctified by tapasaya and the transcendental love exchanged between the Lord and his devotees.
In the days of yore, people undertook long, arduous journeys when they went on pilgrimage. Now it's more comfortable as there are many facilities available. This is a manifestation of Lord Krishna’s mercy towards his devotees, who are caught up in the everyday struggle of life.
But since purification cannot be done without Tapasya, he makes sure to send us a token of hardship just to polish our consciousness. So, if there are difficulties in the journey, understand that you have managed to attract Lord Krishna’s attention and be grateful.
The Dwarka Temple dedicated to Dwarkadhish, also called as Jagat Mandir, is situated on the western shore of the Okhamandal Peninsula at the banks of Gomti River. The history of Dwarka temple goes back to 2,500 years. It is said that the temple got submerged in the sea six times.
It's a 5 storey structure supported by 72 pillars. Limestone is the principal material used which remains in its pristine condition to this day. The two gateways to the temple are named Swarga Dwar through which pilgrims enter and Moksha Dwar through which the pilgrims exit.
From the temple, there are 56 steps leading to the Gomti River. The central deity of the Dwarka temple is Lord Krishna depicted in the form of Lord Vishnu. This main idol in the sanctum sanctorum measures 2.2 feet tall in shiny black stone and is named as Dwarkadhish.
The 4 hands of the idol hold Shanka, Chakra, Gadha and Padma.
On the temple spire, a long flag of 52 yards is seen which is visible from 10 km. The flag bears the symbols of sun and moon and is changed five times a day in a ritualistic manner. This tradition has a long history.
The Gomti Ghat is located right behind the Dwarkadheesh temple. It is believed that you must take a dip in the holy waters before visiting the temple. Watching the confluence of the Gomti River and Arabian Sea and witnessing the sunset is a magical experience.
Dwarka city is on the shore and even though it’s remote, on the west coast, and a long way from major cities, many pilgrims go there bcs it is one of the 4 prominent holy places in the cardinal directions of India: Dwarka(West), Puri(East), Rameshwaram(South), Badrinath (North).

"Incidentally, Dwarka town and temple were targeted by Pakistan Navy in 1965 war but due to poor marksmanship and Lord Krishna’s grace no damage happened to the town. Not even ‘trees uprooted’.

Jai Shri Krishna!!"

In today's Mahabharat episode, #ShriKrishna talks of construction of Dwarka. Why? Read..
Shri Krishna had cautioned against war with Jarasandh and gives the idea of shifting the capital from Mathura to Dwaraka.
Urgasena said to Krishna that he would forever be known as a Ranchod for running away from the battle field. Krishna did not flinch and answered that he is already known by several names.
He then prayed for Vishwakarma to appear before the Mathura court. Vishwakarma appeared and showed the court the plan of Dwarka. The entire gathering was stunned at the beauty of the city.
Like Makhan-chor, where people accuse Krishna lovingly of stealing their butter, Ranchod became an endearing name and Lord Krishna became famous with this name owing to this incident.
