I’m sick to fucking death of working in an industry that refuses to acknowledge that the biggest barrier, not just at entry level, but the whole way along a career, is, and always will be money 1/
I’m currently sitting, having worked behind a bar 11 days in a row, writing for a TV show with a deadline tonight, before going back to working behind a bar tomorrow. I’ll get my writing done, and it’ll be good, because that’s my job - this in itself is not an issue 2/
But the silence about doors being closed to people who don’t come from a privileged background is utterly deafening. There’s a million and one harebrained, box ticking ‘schemes’ at the minute that are totally unfit for purpose 3/
See the insanely obtuse application form you want me to write, with no indication of what you want me to say in it, that will take two days to write when I could be using that time to work on a script, having had no time to think about because the deadline is in a week? No use 4/
“Why didn’t you apply for x scheme?” Because I only found out about it 2 days before the deadline, because you made no effort to advertise it to people who might not have the time to trawl twitter all day - and you wanted half a script, my DNA sequencing, a goldfish... 5/
...and a completed 20,000 piece jigsaw, none of which has any relevance to whether or not I was suitable for the gig. And also, as a side note, the last time I applied under the same criteria you gave it to a person who gave you a squirrel, and the DNA sequencing of a plant 6/
I AD& #39;d a show 2 years ago and worked 27 days IN A ROW before I got a day off. I was in the rehearsal room Mon-Fri, then working Friday, Saturday and Sunday just so I could get the experience I needed, whilst also having the money to splash out on the odd packet of Jaffa cakes 7/
It was easy enough back in the day for artists to sign onto the dole, and then make work. That is not the case anymore 8/
Can we stop giving financial awards to people who don’t need to pay their own rent, can we stop expecting people to see shows when they don’t have the time for, can we acknowledge that if someone is working on a project for you, they’ve probably taken time off... 9/
... work that pays them to do it, and can we stop pretending that everyone has the time to cut about shmoozing the arses off of decision makers at press nights.
