This is where the 2019 Justin Herbert thread begins
There's not much to this play, but he's shown in his career to be competent on the move. He can his his target in the chest, even if his body isn't aligned or set.
There's a lot of Carson Wentz to his game, on the high-end comp. He's a fun creator. This is a potentially reckless play but some of that is necessary to succeed.
This is an even better example than the first play of Herbert's accuracy on the move. This is a fantastic throw to an intermediate target
The last notable throw from this game, mostly due to a conservative game plan from Oregon, is nice because he beat the defender on third down, but the placement was poor. Receiver had reach back, losing his momentum. May have cost himself a TD on the throw. It's the little things
Blocker missed the blitzing linebacker, and this is a tough throw while being hit. Herbert misses the open man for what would've been a score.
Hits the easy TD pass up the seam.
Terrific touch throw to convert the first down against pressure. Want to continue to see these types of plays from him.
Next touchdown is an open one
Nice bootleg action creates an open target. touchdown.
Pump helps his man spring free, and Herbert hits him. Nicely done right before halftime.
He has a bad habit of getting his receivers hit hard. Some of this is from staring down or throwing late.
Next touchdown was great. This was his best game in a long time. Great touch and ability to throw crossbody.
Herbert's first touchdown against Montana showed great placement. Pylon throw, only his man can get. Right in stride. Good timing.
Second touchdown
Escapes nicely and converts the first down on the move
Here's an example of what I'd like to see improve. A little pressure coming, and he doesn't hit the right shoulder. Ball is behind and low. He's streaky on these intermediate passes, costing the offense points.
Excellent play by Herbert. Avoids the rush, rolls out with his eyes up, delivers a really good ball. That's the good stuff.
Two Herbert plays here. First is a nice improvisation against pressure to convert the first down. A run play, but then his fourth TD of the game, via a screen.
Big-time placement on this throw between defenders, but the TD is dropped. Tough catch but he gave his man a chance.
5th TD pass is on a screen.
RPO makes for an easy touchdown as the slot crashes and safety takes a poor angle.
Really like Herbert testing this window and giving his man a good ball with the defender turned.
Play with direct pressure continues to create odd results. Dangerous pass
Again he struggles under pressure. Hits the wrong shoulder, misses the conversion, and gets his man walloped
Cool play design and good execution for his third touchdown
Herbert never saw the underneath defender despite it being man coverage. Or ignored him and trusted his arm.
This is just frustrating. 3rd and 10, why even throw this ball when the placement doesn't allow any chance to move the chains? Clean pocket, he should work hi-low.
Finally a nice throw under pressure
Good ball to split defenders and deliver a ball with the right arc on it.
Back to back conversion down throws. Neither is catchable.
Lone TD throw, nice play design. Saw it in the NFL a few years ago.
Nice job seeing the coming pressure and hitting a 20-yard pass to set up a third and manageable situation
Plenty of time in the pocket, Herbert gets a bit antsy but eventually finds Breeland for a score on third down
Really great throw on the run from Herbert. Love seeing this. Ruled incomplete but accurate still
Great ball to the back of the end zone. This would've been a TD in the NFL. Dropped though
Ugly miss on a conversion down. Way too much on this pass. No need to rush it
Nice seam pass on the money
Missed the previous throw for an open touchdown but hits this tight window under pressure. He was a lot better this game against pressure and on conversion downs. Big game for Herbert despite mediocre numbers
Herbert does a nice job finding the gap in the zone for the first down
12-yard touchdown pass from Herbert. Splits the defender nicely.
He hurries this throw and missed a crucial third down conversion. Gotta be better when pressured.
He's having a dreadful day so far. Second time leaving an open intermediate pass short.
Second touchdown is on a quick screen.
Great throw from Herbert up the middle of the field. Does so in the face of pressure. Tough play.
Loses track of time and costs his team either a FG attempt or another deep pass. Have to play smart.
Another good throw under pressure. He's inconsistent, which is maddening. But this a money throw for first down
Oregon goes back to this play from the Cal game, and get a 4th down score because the corner crashes.
Extends third down and hits an intermediate target. Has to be careful with the ball - could've been a strip sack. But a positive play under pressure
Gets another easy touchdown to put the Ducks up late
Great job standing tall in the pocket and delivering a fastball on a third down.
Well timed third down completion here as well. You can see he released this ball early and read the defender perfectly.
First throw is a dropped touchdown due to the defender getting away with a hold. Second one is a bad overthrow on third down as pressure hits Herbert.
Herbert's deep ball needs major work. No reason to miss this from a clean pocket. Underthrows it, and costs himself a touchdown.
Looks like his target ended the route early, and this goes straight to the defender.
Some of his nicest plays come from rollouts or play-action drops from under center.
Herbert was hit low and late on the screen pass.
He came right back in and delivered a nice touchdown pass. This is great ball placement and what we wanna see.
Delivers a great fade pass to Johnson. He's playing much better since a rocky first quarter.
His third touchdown pass. All three came on play action attempts between 11-19 yards and left of the hashmark.
We haven't seen Herbert have much success going deep this year, but he connected with his open receiver as pressure arrived on this one
No reason to miss this open third down throw. Stance is a bit tight and he gets lucky it's not a pick
much better throw on this third down. great arm strength is on display
Second dropped interception as he foolishly tried to force this pass into a nonexistent window
Perfect deep ball again for a touchdown. Smoother delivery and more touch than what he normally has shown on these deep attempts. Question is whether he can more consistently hit these deep open guys than what he has.
Stellar highlight throw again. Feel like we don't see many back shoulders from Herbert, but maybe we should see more. Excellent throw and placement under pressure.
Final touchdown came on a third down screen
This one is actually picked. Third interceptable pass of the game, but his TD-to-INT ratio looks way better due to luck. He trusts his arm too often and doesn't have the anticipation or ball placement to get the ball past the defender. Was 1/5 with an int on 3rd/4th&10 and beyond
This was a dreadful game for Herbert but he started with a nice throw as he rolled to his left. Impressive zip.
Missed this third down throw on the opening drive. Ball needs to be more in front of his receiver, not a fastball behind him. It was catchable, but a bad throw.
Badly airmails the first throw along the sideline. Have to wonder about his touch on these examples. But follows it up with a much nicer arc on third down to set up a score.
Bad back-to-back throws in the third. Dropped interception on the first one as the corner played it perfectly. He took a chance, which is fine, but ball needs to be outside, not inside. Second one sails as his legs get wide as pressure nears.
Another long stretch without a notable pass, then throws this pick. Buried his team with mistakes. Receiver gets bumped and Herbert apparently doesn't see the defender
Throws a nice back-shoulder pass as he loads up for it
Gets an open touchdown to close the gap. We see this play work quite a bit in college now.
Dropped interception on their final drive. Looked like the underneath guy didn't follow his route all the way through.
Screen for a td to end the game.
Nice ball on the out route that's yanked out on third down. Counted as an accurate drop.
Touchdown throw here shows a bit of problematic placement. Nearly intercepted since it's behind his target. It's an okay pass that required a strong finish
That arm strength pays off with some tight windows. nice throw on fourth down
Poor ball placement again, this time costing him a third down conversion. It's behind his man
Quick release on the third down. Great pass on the crucial play.
Nice rollout deep pass. Using his athleticism outside of the pocket is a must
Easy deep touchdown as Johnson fools the corner. Good pump combo from Herbert too
Risky jump ball that worked out for him
Breaks down under pressure and throws a should-be interception. Needed to lead his man to have any chance here
Suffered another drop here. This is a tough catch due to the angle but was catchable.
He had a nice opening drive, but second drive he stares down his read and makes it easy for the defender to leap in front, nabbing the pick
Missing high under pressure is a scary trait, and Herbert routinely rushes his process and misses high under pressure
His awareness is something to be very concerned about. Doesn't feel the pressure or understand that a sack costs them a chance to go for it on fourth down.
Best throw of the game comes late in the fourth. Unfortunately, it's dropped. But his process and mechanics are great here.
