Thread 1: Hawaiian history. something you never learned, not even close to the truth in school and cannot be found on google. ever seen a full blooded Hawaiian? the Hawaiians you’ve seen on the media look nothing like pure blooded Hawaiian. here is my great Aunty. full blooded.
the media from the beginning of times with europeans, has always been promoting lighter skin. my boyfriend and i were out to dinner one night and the waiter asked me what a full Hawaiian looks like and i told him dark black skinned. tight corse hair, curlier than mine.
he couldn’t believe it, and i wasn’t surprised. everybody has forgotten the GENOCIDE against the Hawaiians. yes. i said genocide. let me take you to January 17th, 1893. the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and Queen Lili‘oukalani.
Hawai‘i, and our last Queen who locals say still reigns because she died of sadness for her country. her people. and her ‘āina. We were always a simple people, peaceful, kind country. the U.S wanted our sugar cane. told our Queen they want to have Hawai‘i become apart of the -
U.S so they could “help the Hawaiian people and their government” in exchange for sale of the sugar cane. our Queen said no, we will not surrender to U.S. government but we can do what Hawai‘i has been doing with nearby islands, trading. we can trade goods for sugar cane.
the U.S, to sum it up, pretty much said well actually we weren’t giving you a choice. either you surrender or we will take your land. so. our Queen refused, said the Hawaiian people will fight for their land. we brought knives, to a gun fight.
of course we all know what happened from here. U.S conquered Hawaiian islands. but what you don’t know, is what happened after the overthrow of the Hawaiian islands. the GENOCIDE. over 400,000 full blooded Hawaiians and after the U.S fight, 40,000 remained. and it only continued
- continued to lessen as time went on. what history books, and even google fails to tell you about my ancestors is that they were MURDERED for speaking in Ōlelo (Hawaiian language). beaten, lynched, even decapitated. for speaking their Native language.
U.S created a law that banned Hawaiians to speak Ōlelo in schools, english was to be the only language spoken. but they never mentioned how even children would be beaten if they were heard speaking Ōlelo.
and here’s why tourism will never be okay to me. until Hawai‘i is restored to sovereignty. Hawaiians were beaten for their practices and language. BUT. if it had to do with performing for foreigners, at hotels, THEN they could chant. dance hula. ONLY then would it be allowed.
now, people wonder why there’s not a lot of full blooded Hawaiians like there are Samoans, Tongans, Fijians, Tahitian, etc in the Polynesian race. and why they call us the “dying breed” and why not many speak fluent Hawaiian (Ōlelo) unlike the -
the other Polynesian races. you see plenty of full blooded Samoans. can speak fluently their language. along with Tongans and etc. this is because my ancestors were beaten. killed. hung. lynched, decapitated. for speaking Ōlelo and dancing hula and chanting. but this was all
allowed in the presence of tourists. when my Papa was growing up, he told me Waikiki had 2 hotels. and now? all you see is hotels. Our land has been desecrated. and it only continues to get worse today.
