This is my (now deceased) grandfather, he was a navigator in Lancaster Bombers. He was shot down over Germany and spent time as a POW, escaped and recaptured. He thought the EU was the best and only way to secure peace in Europe.
A strong man, I still miss him.
A strong man, I still miss him.
From what I remember him saying, most of the crew perished, he had shrapnel in his “posterior” and when captured was taken to a hospital. He escaped by climbing down a rope of sheets. Captured , escaped again, recaptured. Released at the end of the war and made his way home.
Finding transport where he could, stealing bikes, and a fantastic story of staying in a deserted chateau that had been requisitioned by the Nazis. He was a baker in Wigton, when he finally got back he had developed an allergy to flour

His parents, his partner or someone had saved his ration book and with this he acquired a box of Crunchie’s which for some reason he craved. He never ate one again
