I very much enjoy the fine nuanced work of novelist Donal Ryan, but occasionally he does look like he's contemplating the best way to deal with one of his men who has betrayed him.

Indeed, here he is no doubt discussing the matter with said individual in an amiable fashion.

Here is Roddy Doyle, the gang's accountant. He'll eventually do a panicked runner to the airport with a suitcase filled with money and two pairs of jocks.

Here he is in the moment he realises that Donal Ryan has discovered he's been skimming money from him for years.

Here is Joseph O' Connor, he used to work for Donal Ryan but he "got out", except he didn't really. He lives by Lake Garda now. Look at his cold dead eyes. He'll be waiting for Roddy Doyle at Fuimincino.
Roddy will be discovered in a toilet cubicle.

Here is Colin Barrett, the young, once idealistic undercover cop who has gotten close to Donal Ryan. He has a wife and a young family waiting at home for him.
Basically he's fucked.

Here is Kevin Barry, relieved that everyone seems to have forgotten about him after Julian Gough's botched hit, but bemused when he meets Colin Barrett in the same underpass where he comes to to think about his own treachery on a weekly basis.

Here is Eimear McBride. She's Donal Ryan's gangster wife. Ambitious, greedy, fiercely loyal. She'll quietly close the door when Donal confronts Colin Barrett in the snooker club he owns. Late she'll see Colin's grieving wife.
She will feel nothing.

Here is Joseph O' Connor's eerily identical older brother who has his own crime empire. Look at his "I will fuck you up" eyes, and his general "you come in here and disrespect me?" demeanour.
When the dust settles he knows deep down he will be the only one left standing.

Here's Anne Enright. Sebastian Barry's former boss. She meets him in a park to talk him out of his obsession. She'll say things like "this is eating you up inside" and "it's not too late to stop." Sebastian appreciates her friendship and kindly wisdom.
But he won't listen to her.
