What is CULTURAL APPROPRIATION?
Cultural appropriation is when someone adopts cultural aspects from a particular minority group who were also oppressed for the same.
Best example is Non-blacks wearing braids.
What is ACCULTURATION?
When a minority group adopts something from the dominant group.
Example: Indians/other minority groups wearing western clothes.
CULTURAL ASSIMILATION is when a group/person's language/culture resembles those of another group. It might seem similar to acculturation but cultural assimilation is two way process. Both dominant and minority culture has adopted cultures from each other.
Cultural assimilation examples: 1.Non-english speakers learning english.
2. British adopting words from sanskrit.
3. People moving to other countries and adopting their culture or languages.
I've seen people defending cultural appropriation by mixing acculturation and assimilation with appropriation. Y'all are just clowns đŸ€Ą
Whenever you see braids, don't go around saying "It's just hair"or"My faves did it better".No hun, they didn't nor it's JUST hair. Blacks were oppressed for wearing their own hair. They lost their jobs cuz their hair is 'unprofessional' or 'ugly' but aesthetic when your faves do.
I'm not black but I'm aware of the situation. A few days ago, my friend asked me an interesting question about this. They asked "Why non-black person wearing braids is CA but a black person getting their hair straightened or relaxed isn't?"
Blacks, mostly women getting their hair straightened is acculturation. Moreover, non-blacks aren't oppressed for having straight hair or lose their jobs for the same. Black people are pressured to do so or wear weaves because of their schools or work. Its not their own choice.
Moving on from braids, people adopting desi culture is appropriation as well. People wearing desi fashion IS cultural appropriation unless they're attending an Indian marriage or function. Also, a foreigner wearing desi clothes in India is assimilation.
Bindi IS cultural appropriation and non-south asians shouldn't wear it for their aesthetics. People mocked indians and called them dotheads for wearing bindis.
Mehndi is not a cultural appropriation because menhdi doesn't exclusively belong to Indian/desi culture. But aalta/awlata (red dye) on hands or feet is cultural appropriation. I've never came across aalta appropriation but considering ignorant ones, it might soon be appropriated.
Joining hands is not exclusive to Indian culture but bobbing heads while joining hands is offensive and used for mocking Indians because non-indians have such stereotypes against Indians.
Yoga is not cultural appropriation, but using Indian classical dance moves is cultural appropriation. Yoga is accepted globally while non-indians use mudras from Indian classical dances while bobbing heads sideways to mock Indians. It's not funny or a joke.
Indians take years of practice to learn classical dances. Its an art form. Not anyone can randomly use those mudras or moves to mock Indians. Do not excuse yourself/others by saying they're using yoga mudras. Yoga mudras aren't used for dancing. They're used for meditation.
Its not a joke. Take your time and educate yourselves rather than being ignorant.
