I still hate Sonic Lost World with a flaming passion.

It's my least favorite game in the series by far, but there's this... one moment from the game that really sticks with me
So at some point in the story, Sonic and Tails start arguing since they teamed up with Eggman to help defeat the Deadly Six, as a result of Sonic's mistake of kicking the Conch (which controls the D6) out of Eggman's hands.
Tails eventually gets kidnapped and Sonic is too slow (!) to save him.

Not only that, but the Deadly Six have also activated the Extractor which is sucking all the life out of Earth, which leaves Amy and Knuckles to die as well.
By the time they reach Lava Mountain, this leaves Sonic and Eggman... except he, along with Orbot and Cubot, seemingly fall off a bridge into the lava.
That leaves Sonic all on his own to fight the Deadly Six. The stakes are high, the environment is dangerous, the music is intense, the levels are a boss rush...
...but then you get to Lava Mountain, Zone 2.
It's completely unlike everything else in that world.

Like in Tropical Coast Zone 3, you're under the sea, grinding on rails in what seems like an endless mechanical passage. The music, "Sea Bottom Segue", gives it a serene feel.

You've been in this kinda place before, right?
But back then, you were with Tails. Amy and Knuckles were back home rooting for you. Even the thought of Eggman to beat up was comforting.

Here... you have no one. Amy, Knuckles, even Eggman, gone.

And your best friend... you couldn't save him.

And it's all your fault.
It is only in the depths of the ocean,
in an empty metal void,
on an entirely different planet,

all alone,

can these thoughts surface.

No matter how fast you go, how long you grind...

...loneliness will always catch up to you.
The gravity of this situation gives Sea Bottom Segue entirely new meaning.

Instead of being just a chill underwater level theme, it becomes a bittersweet serenade... to reflect on what you've done.
No other game in the series has ever captured this melancholy feeling of isolation.

Even in Forces, you always had someone to count on. The concept of "Null Space", a nothing that goes on forever, was coined in that game.

But thanks to the Avatar, you escaped it in 10 seconds.
The feeling of having no one out there to help you...

...that is the true null space.
