A thread:

I have not written this out ahead of time, I am writing as I go, so bear with me, this is just a musing.

The Lord of the Flies theory of millennials.

This is a different generation than ever before in history. This is a generation that grew up in a 1/
different place from their parents. What do I mean by that?

The internet is a place and the first parents to have children grow up there never realized that. They didn’t realize that when their children, who were five feet away from them staring at a screen, they were 2/
somewhere else. Somewhere else with people these parents didn’t know.

Prior to this, parents oversaw who their kids were playing with, who they were listening to. What kinds of conversations the kids were having was at least overseen. Not with this generation.

3/
4/
These parents didn’t have parental controls. They didn’t know about watching what the kids were doing. So they didn’t watch.

And this generation grew up differently from any other generation. They had more peers than any other kids in history. Prior, you only knew a
5/ handful of kids in your neighborhood and maybe at the neighborhood of a relative. With the internet you suddenly had thousands of potential friends or potential LACK of friends.

The internet created peer pressure like never before seen.

And it gave kids POWER.
6/ The internet, this powerful new tool that the parents were only beginning to learn, gave kids power never before given to children.

Don’t like a teacher? Kids could suddenly band together and get that teacher fired by commenting en masse. After all, who knew who
7/ was behind that keyboard?

This is a generation of kids that grew up without parents in a place where the parents never came, because the parents didn’t even know that the kids were in a PLACE.

And the kids became, as kids would without adult supervision, just like
8/ the kids from Lord of the Flies.

They have taken bullying to a whole new level, because that’s how children battle each other for dominance.

Have you noticed how all the threats these days sound like childish threats? “I’ll kill myself” has become the threat of the day,
9/ terrifying all into inaction. It’s the “I’ll hold my breath until I turn blue” threat of a child. Yet, because of the power of the internet that these kids learned to use, it is now a powerful tool.

Never have children been given this kind of power that they have today.
10/ Never before have children HAD this kind of power. And they are using it as children would.

They are demanding more allowance, not having worked yet to understand where money comes from.

They are demanding that people do as they say or they throw tantrums, but these
11/ tantrums are different than normal childish tantrums. These tantrums have the ability to get people fired. To destroy careers.

This is the first time a generation of children have been reared by other children with power, in a place without adults, and we are seeing the
12/ results of this experiment that no one thought was happening.

We have childish demands instead of debate. We have fantastical thinking taking over laws. We have these children becoming the teachers now and holding positions of power. They are in government. Only no one
13/ ever taught them how to grow up. They have not had discipline or guidance in this place they were reared.

This is a Lord of the Flies generation who have no way to get back to home. We are all on their island.

End thread
I’ve been told the generation I’m discussing is a bit later than millens, that they are called Gen Z. Or MillenGenz. Maybe a crossover of both?

This is just a beginning theory, so take what you want. Tweak it how you like. :).
Or iGen.
14/ Notice here how this person speaks in very childish terms. They think that emotional manipulation is the way to gain something and even their confidence has waned bc the tantrum didn’t work?

That’s how a child thinks. A child whose tantrums have worked in the past.
15/ Think of the term “tone policing”. It’s supposed to be bad. It’s not. Tone policing is what adults do in a polite society bc adults know that if you treat people with disrespect that leads to violence.

Only kids think that is bad. Kids who think “adult” things are bad.
16/. Today I watched as people online celebrated the death of a young woman who had brain cancer. Vitriol is ramping up. Is it the safety of the keyboard that has ended manners? Or is it that no one ever told them that’s unacceptable behavior? It is getting vicious out here.
18. These are fly lords. They are getting older and bolder. They have not grown up. They may never grow up. https://twitter.com/cvaldary/status/1298389511752364034
19. Let’s talk about DARVO. It is how lord of the flies children argue. DARVO stands for deny, accuse, reverse victim and offender. Essentially, the proper response is I know you are but am I.

Each accusation they hurl is an admission. It has nothing to do with you.
20. They DARVO because arguments aren’t meant to persuade. These lord of the flies kids didn’t learn logic or debate. They learned online power. And that power comes in the accusations. No one sticks around online past the first sentence so the accusations stick.
21. What’s interesting is these accusations are most often a confession. If you want to know what they are thinking about you, it’s in the accusation. If they call you some name associated with being a bigot, you can bet they are bigoted against you.
22. So how do you deal with the lord of the flies woke mob when they come for you? You treat them as children throwing a tantrum. You act like the grown up and show them consequences. This is beautiful example (Photo included in case things get deleted): https://twitter.com/afneil/status/1301822074982404096
23. Fly lords in action. Lord of the flies children who were raised by other children. https://twitter.com/stillgray/status/1304865692651384832
24. More fly lords in action. This is the result of children who were never told no. Imagine thinking you have the right to block a bridge into a city of millions of people. This the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan! https://twitter.com/jfnyc1/status/1304970072067276800
25. Here is a perfect example of the tactics the Lord of the Flies children discovered. They intimidate by calling a mob to get you to lose your job. Even if they don’t come for you this has a chilling effect. They get a lot of power this way. https://twitter.com/simone___xx/status/1305340856321413120
26. If the Fly Lords aren’t trying to get you fired, they will come after your business. They flock to review sites to harm your reputation if you don’t do as they demand. No one ever told them they couldn’t behave this way. No parents reared this behavior out of them. https://twitter.com/christophelston/status/1305195256455991301
27. See how the goal post shifts. First it is just “be kind”. Then it is “get rid of hate speech”. The totalitarian demands get stronger and stronger.

Here it is called “hate speech” to refuse to do as you are told and say what is demanded.

See what is happening.
28. Here we have an example of a fly lord (lord of the flies child) who thinks they can police what people eat.

Imagine if a parent had been in the room the first time a child tried this totalitarianism? They would correct this. But these kids learned this on their own. https://twitter.com/agkdesign/status/1305515786589487104
29. Random observation.

Do you notice how this lord of the flies generation is so big on belonging to a “community”? That’s because they face mobs of bullies online. Not just one or two in a school. There is safety in numbers.
30. However, this “community” that they run to is just as conformity demanding as the mob from which they ran. It’s a constant battle of making sure you are 100% right and therefore 100% safe. They can not tolerate dissent. Or individuality. All must conform.
31. The fly lords (lord of the flies children) get bolder and more violent every day. Here they go to a man’s home, stand on his property, scream obscenities at him with a bullhorn for hours, and shine lights in his windows.
The police did not stop them. https://twitter.com/elijahschaffer/status/1306070890732548097
32. Today the fly lords decided to go after an author. She is deemed unacceptable for saying sex is real. She wrote a fictional book. The mob didn’t like the plot line of one of the characters. They get #RIPJKRowling trending. They send death threats.
33. Maybe I should rename this theory “The Internet is a Place; Do you know where your children are?”

This is a perfect example of this. Adults grooming young girls that their parents and other friends know nothing about. https://twitter.com/terfalicious/status/1299863533182689280
34. The key here is not only isolating the children from their parents but they are isolated from other kids who might be able to warn them. Notice all the kids who said years later they thought they were the only ones.
35. Kids think they are cool when an adult pays attention to them. They feel special. Even when it starts to feel creepy they don’t want to let go of that specialness. That’s what the predator counts on. The child’s ego.
36. Somehow I think this whole #GameStop stock manipulation/stock play is related to this. These kids have grown up and learned to act together in large groups in ways no one ever expected before.
37. More examples of the fly lords. NYC students are angry at teachers. They control the adults with threats of being called racist:

“If you’ve been called out on this account, no one is obligated to forgive you, especially not those that you’ve traumatized.”

Adults are cowed. https://twitter.com/realchrisrufo/status/1354840149675409410
38. Today’s lord of the flies observation: people are tribal and brutal. This needs to be socialized out of them to have a non warring society. Too many groups have been told they are special and can do no wrong. You see the most brutality, racism, and bigotry from them.
39. The fly lords move out of the schools where they have had control of their peers to thinking they can now tell society at large how to act.
40. Another tactic of fly lords is to police tweet liking. You may ask, who has time for this? Remember, fly lords act not for communication purposes but to assert control. This tactic is meant to make you hesitate the next time you might show support for someone unapproved. https://twitter.com/ayeshahazarika/status/1372858016295444484
41. Another lord of the flies example is this bill from Canada. Requiring that therapists affirm and never question a child’s angst. Who would write such a bill? Children. That’s who. And the adults are too cowed to fight them. National policy is becoming more immature. https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson/status/1374210377156751364
42. Here is a perfect example of fly lord thinking. The adults are the bad guys. Adults are to be shunned. Their wisdom ignored. Intelligence is shunned as well as some kind of bigotry. Similar to the Star Trek episode where they call adults Gr’ups.
43. Here are great insights from a therapist to add to this thread. https://twitter.com/messpugge/status/1384251297902129156
