So like are we gonna talk about how in the 1700s, Argentina’s population was reportedly 50% black but in the 2010 census black people only make up 0.37% of the population? Are we gonna talk about what they did to make that happen? Because it’s pretty atrocious.
Argentina is 97% White. NINETY-SEVEN PERCENT!!!!!!!
So I realize some people genuinely don’t know anything about this so let me tell you how they did it. Historians say there were two main contributing factors to this disappearance of the black population.
1. Argentina’s War with Paraguay from 1865-1870 and other wars. Blacks were forcibly conscripted by the thousands and were the ones placed to fight on the frontlines of these conflicts.
With black men dying in droves, black women in Argentina partnered with more white men, beginning the “whitening” process common in Latin America.
2. The Argentinian government isolating blacks into decrepit neighborhoods during disease outbreaks, most important being Yellow Fever in 1871.
Black people also began fleeing to Uruguay as Argentina social climate was hostile towards them.
In 1848, President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento wrote: “In the United States… 4 million are black, and within 20 years will be 8 [million]…. What is [to be] done with such blacks, hated by the white race?
Slavery is a parasite that the vegetation of English colonization has left attached to leafy tree of freedom.”
In 1895, the black population had dwindled so low that Argentina stopped putting “African/Black” on their census.
