Just leaving a picture of a tree ring here under the suspicion that this might have something to do with nested sets representation and growth and branching of actual trees.
TIL about imaginal discs in insects. These discs in larvae undergoes transformation in a force field called morphogenetic field: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphogenetic_field to generate the organs of the insect.
Stumbled on this presentation on trees and graphs: https://courses.cs.washington.edu/courses/cse512/14wi/lectures/Trees&Graphs.pdf by @nathriche which has some cool pointers on what I might have missed in my first attempt. Also the resources section of the course is well worth a look: https://courses.cs.washington.edu/courses/cse512/14wi/index.html
A very interesting post by @breandan that describes the various contexts in which graphs find application. Well worth a read! http://breandan.net/2020/06/30/graph-computation/
