anytime i see my former professor being hyped by the illustration community i remember this critique he gave 19 y/o me: "last time i checked this is drawing with ink for illustrators, not drawings for my mom's refrigerator"

lmaooo art school sure was great for mental health huh
i had a professor whose critique of my final project, which was 6 feet tall, was "this painting makes my asshole pucker in anger" and that was the only thing he had to say
the (male) head of the illustration department spent my final portfolio review not looking at my work, but teaching me step by step "how to draw a beautiful woman" in the most degrading way b/c he thought my women weren't feminine enough
will never forget the professor who opened his class by saying "there are 25 of you in this class. 1 of you will be an illustrator, 24 of you will be cab drivers." thank you for the vote of confidence, man in charge of my education
last one, i had a professor say once that a painting i was working on looked like "pig shit"

he died a year later though so i won that round
anyway this is what happens when art schools hire illustrators who have no teaching background. great for some industry knowledge but half of my professors had no business nurturing young creatives & caused us a lot of mental anguish with their "methods" of teaching.
it was cool to gain insight from the top industry professionals but hurt that much worse when the best in my field said awful things about my work that left such a mark on me in my developing years.
there's a difference between critique and cruelty, and not only do we as developing artists need to be taught that, but those who have power over us should KNOW better and know which to wield in their pursuit to help us grow.
