FILHAAL
First-ever film based on surrogate mother. Trust actress Tabu to pick such a delicate topic, along with Sushmita Sen.

Quite unknown movie, but worth a watch!
Kabhi tau tum, meri muhabbat ka yaqeen karlo
Guzar na jaaye yeh umer azmanay main
MAQBOOL
Shakespeare's trilogy by Vishal Bharadwaj with Tabu-Irfan Khan-Pankaj Kapoor. Other two films of trilogy are more famous than this one. Maqbool is less commercial but richer with acting/direction/storyline and haunting music.

"Aag k liye pani ka dar bane rehna chahiye."
LEELA
Released in 2002 w/ Dimple Kapadia & Vinod Khanna.
DK is shown as an accomplished professor but always lived as wife of a famous poet i.e. VK. This film is her story of exploring herself beyond the shadow of husband.
ZUBEIDAA
Karishma Kapoor proved her mettle for acting with this vinatage story, last part of a trilogy based on actress Zubeidaa Begum. This movie has all the shades toxic masculinity, false patriarchy, and internal misogyny.
SARDARI BEGUM
Part of Zubeidaa trilogy by Shyam Benegal.

Aptly depicting the complexity of Muslim families when religion comes in one's way of pursuing the passion, and it's attached cost.
Kiron Kher and Amrish Puri are few names of this talented starred movie.
BHOPAL EXPRESS
We all know Chernobyl, but we don't know what happened in Bhopal in 1984! 8000 ppl died and over 5lacs contracted reactionary diseases.
The film tells the story of a newly-wed couple living in the factory area and the aftermath of mass human tragedy.
HAZARON KHUWAHISHEIN AISI
Set against India's one-time imposed emergency in '70s, reflecting on young revolutionary minds. Based on 3 friends who eventually come together for nothing but "love". This movie reaches the peak of human emotions and its reactions to life.
SHABD
Only time when you'll see Zayed Khan acting ;)
This film has some very catchy music with an interesting story. Sanjay Dutt plays role of a writer who believes to change people's destiny through his pen.
BANDIT QUEEN
You can't miss a movie made on Phoolan Devi, directed by Shekhar Kapoor, and music by the great NFAK.

Phoolan Devi herself denounced this film but after financial settlement went quite. Arundhati Roy questioned the rape scene without Phoolan's consent.
RUDAALI
Film's name is based on professional mourners of lower caste of Rajasthan. Starring Dimple Kapadia and Raakhi, this films picks on a very unusual profession and its people.

FIRAAQ
Multi-star cast film shows aftermath of Gujrat Riots. Firaaq is mainly about 24hours of multiple characters who witnessed/suffered from riots.
I would like to call it a film showing PTSD in a cinematic way!
SHAHID
A biographical film based on human rights activist Shahid Azmi - an unknown until he became known. Rajkumar Rao has played this role with heart-wrenching performance.
This film tells you all about '92 riots and how Muslims afterwards face systematic harassment.
ASTITVA
This film will test your pseudo morality!
Tabu gave an outclass performance, and hats off to Mahesh Manjrekar for writing/directing such a bold script.
A neglected housewife and a self-consumed husband come to the point in life from where they don't know where to go.
MADRAS CAFE
I'm not a fan of nationalist films but this one is different.
John Abraham plays the role of an army major who accidentally finds out the plan of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination.
Our Zeb Bangash has sung a soulful song in this film called Ajnabi.
HU TU TU
Ever heard of this film? Maybe not cuz it has Sunil Shetty.....but with Tabu and Nana Patekar.
This is not your cute fairy kind of love story. It is complicated! Songs are lovely, the story is ugly (as in the ugly side of politically influential families)
KAUM DE HEERE (Punjabi)
Banned in India since the time of release in '14.
Film talks about the 2 Sikh bodyguards who killed Indra Gandhi as a revenge of the golden temple - the operation blue star.

Remember, always watch banned films. They tell you what nobody has told you :)
TAMANNA
Pooja Bhatt and Paresh Rawal have given stellar performances in this film. Released in 1998, Tamanna is all about the double standards of our society, especially in India where female foeticide is a disastrous practice across classes and castes.
NISHABD
Inspired by American Beauty, but in Indian family setup. Amitabh is Amitabh of course but its Jiah Khan who stole the show with her acting.
Nishabd is shot mostly in shades of blue/green, making it a breathtaking watch.
Don't forget to listen to its track Rozaana!
BLACK & WHITE
Anil Kapoor's extremely underrated film where he housed an Afghan suicide bomber, unknowingly. The film is about human interactions and experiences with deeply rooted fundamentalism in brainwashed minds.
AASTHA
A '97 release starring Om Puri & Rekha as a married couple, living a basic life. But it doesn't remain that simple for Rekha as she turns from a meek housewife to a dazzling prostitute.
Explicit scenes. Intricate storyline.
GHULAMI
A 1985 release when India was going through many other changes, this film chose to talk about the caste system and feudal criminalities in Rajasthan state. Ghulami has a strong screenplay, excellent acting, and Zihal Miskeen <3
MIRZYA
I'm a sucker for hopeless romantic films, and Mirzya is just that!
If looking for a cinematic experience, Rajasthani fusion music, and want to shed some tears then Mirzya is a good bet.
MIRCH MASALA
Indian art cinema has given us some of the strongest female characters-based movies. MM is one of them with Sumita Patel-Om Puri-Naseerudin Shah.
Mirch Masala is about misuse of power against women and deadly silence of men. Watch the film for powerful ending :)
DIL SE
If anyone ever says #ShahrukhKhan is not legendary, show them this film or watch for yourself if you are that person.

Sitaron se agay jahan aur bhi hain
Abhi ishq ke imtihaan aur bhi hain
DHOOP
Struggles of a father, when his young son embraced martyrdom in Indian Army. Om Puri and Gul Panang have come together in this highly sentimental movie to leave you in tears.

Jagjit Singh's immortal voice gave this film "Benaam sa yeh dird thehar kuon nahi jaata"
BANARAS
Urmila Matondkar, indeed an underrated actress and so is this film. Story of an inter-caste relationship in the heart of Banaras which explains the turmoil of human emotions and refuge in religion.
Beautiful music by Himesh Reshammiya.
ALIGARH
Based on the true story of Professor Ramchandra Siras of AMU. He was sacked from his post based on morality. The end is not what you expect. This event happened before LGBTQ became legal in India and shed light on struggles of homos and ignorance of heteros.
MOKSHA
Launched Arjun Rampal, and most famous for its song Jaanleva but the movie has much more to offer.
Tells the story of an idealistic individual who wants equality in the world but ends up becoming the victim of his own obsession.
PYAR TU NE KYA KIYA
Remember Kambakht Ishq??
Yeah, it was from this film. Urmila did a fantastic job while playing the role of an obsessive woman who falls in love with a married man, unknowingly.
