UPDATE -- East Don Trail Phase 1 status

on Monday (a stat holiday when construction crews were sure not to be there) i walked up the Phase 1 portion of the East Don Trail and took some pics

[thread]
the south end of the trail begins at the Forks of the Don, with a (temporary?) Bailey bridge over Taylor Creek just before it meets the East Don river...
there's a chained gate but it's easy to bypass...
the trail has been fully graded for 1.3km north, under the DVP, and along the East Don river to the first of several planned bridges
here's the first bridge (in yellow on the map)

previously, the trail simply ended here

now the graded trail continues on the other side of the river for a short while (also in red on the map above), before coming to a complete stop just before the rail line, the embankment of which is sort of visible just behind those trees
the plan seems to be for a tunnel under the rail line, the very busy Metrolinx Bala sub, carrying the Richmond Hill GO as well as Via trains, so construction will be tricky at best...
from here, you must walk the rails, so be cautious...
oh look, a dead shopping cart in the river
as the map above shows, there will be three more bridges over the river, before the trail meets the rail line again...
nothing has been started on that portion of the trail yet...
this view is back towards the southeast where the first rail bridge is over the river
luckily on Simcoe day no trains came by, and i eventually made it to the last portion of Phase 1 of the East Don Trail...
you can't miss it, it's where you can walk into the Flemingdon Park golf course... i said hi to the groundskeeper, who was patiently filling divots...
the last portion of Phase 1 uses a pre-existing road that starts at Bermondsey and comes right down to the rail line (what it was for, i have no idea)
i suppose this road had something to do with the Bermondsey waste transfer station, now securely fenced off with barbed wire... this sign ("Completion Spring 2011") is interesting in that it lasted longer than the " http://actionplan.gc.ca " url did
