THREAD / Here I will attempt to show the destructive force of the industrial #revolution on the #family - which is central to understanding our present culture and the birth of #FEMINISM.
2. First, it cannot be historically disputed that the industrial revolution of the 19th century, more than any other movement in history, brought wealth to the most amount of people in the least amount of time. This should be granted by all (with other modern goods).
3. However, it was truly a “revolution” since it was hastened too quickly, forcing children into factories and provoking a long tradition of labor riots and violence. It did not observe the wisdom of gradualism practiced for centuries by the Church. https://archive.org/stream/FrameworkOfAChristianStateRevCahill/Framework%20of%20a%20Christian%20State%20Rev%20Cahill_djvu.txt
4. As such, it irrevocably changed the family, and through this also the culture, morals and customs of men and women in society. Before this, most families were farmers, or else lived in small communities where a strong culture bound all together in morals and in stability.
5. In the village, the family was its own economy - to generalize, the man handled the heavier manual labor and the external family government while the wife handled the lighter and more dexterous tasks and governed the children and household.
6. In this economy a man depended on his wife for so much of the family economy that she was indispensable. Hence indissoluble marriage was not only romance and procreation, but a real necessity from an economic view point, since they faced starvation. Notice what is said:
7. The first thing the revolution did was move families to the cities. It then separated a man from his wife, causing a gradual shift of a man‘s economic reliance on his wife so that the character of marriage began to be reduced solely to romance.
8. The revolution also gave the man money while he was alone far from his family. He quickly succumbed to the pressures of effeminate, selfish men with alcohol and spent his money on himself rather than his family. (On effeminacy see https://meaningofcatholic.com/2019/08/02/conquer-effeminacy-and-be-a-man-five-things/)
9. This sparked the temperance movement from the wives, and because of the weakening of the marriage bond to emotions only, very soon divorce laws began to be relaxed. (By the way, this was Protestant America, which is crucial.)
10. There are many other factors which will be discussed in future threads. Stay tuned for more. https://meaningofcatholic.com/2019/08/02/conquer-effeminacy-and-be-a-man-five-things/
