It’s VERY important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, have now become one of their most vigourous supporters, because of the evidence that they are better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.
By “bike-lanes,” I mean separated/protected bike-lanes, not just painted lanes. I realize I’ve gotten a bit less rigorous with the language lately, primarily because I DON’T REALLY CONSIDER IT A BIKE-LANE IF IT ISN’T SEPARATED/PROTECTED. You shouldn’t either.
The bottom line is that safe, separated bike-lanes are good for business! Bike trips may have less spent per shopping visit, but there are MORE bike visits each month, & thus more spent on average by those on bikes than by those in cars. Via an interesting @peopleforbikes Study.
”Perhaps the most comprehensive study of the real-world impact of cycle lanes, found businesses on streets with separated bike routes grew on average more quickly than those without.”
