A thread looking at the Battle for Galatas and the famous counterattack by NZ 23rd Battalion at the point of the Bayonet. In the middle distance is Pink Hill, held by the NZ Petrol Coy until they were forced back past Galatas by the German 100. Mountain Regiment.
Forced back, the Kiwis opted for a rapid counterattack. The CO, Howard Kippenberger first sent in the two Mk VI Vickers Tanks he had at his disposal from 7/RTR, one of them commanded by Lt. Roy Farran on a recce. Farran drove in to Galatas with Machine guns blazing.
Coming back out Farran reported that Galatas was ‘stiff with Jerries’. Kippenberger decided to storm the village in a charge with his men following the tanks back in. The map shows the route of the charge.
We followed the charge through on to the square past the church following the very same road the 23rd NZ Battalion took. One man later wrote “With our Blood pumping there was the shouts, screams and curses followed by many cries of ‘got the bastard’ as the bayonet went in”
Roy Farran’s tank was hit on this charge and two of his crew badly wounded. As the tank swung around it struck a wall and got trapped in a ditch. Here’s two ‘then and now’ comparisons of Farran’s tank taken after the fighting ended.
A close up ‘then and now’ of the location of Farran’s tank after it had been knocked out.
Now here’s something. One enterprising villager took one look at Farran’s tank and decided ‘there’s my new back gate’. It’s still there 78 years later with battle damage still evident. Worth noting just how thin the armour plating is as well.
Galatas wasn’t held by the New Zealander’s for long. The entire line soon had to fall back westwards as the German grip on the island tightened. After the battle for Galatas, then and now.
There’s a very nice memorial in the square today. Galatas is a village well worth a visit. There’s also a small museum on the square containing many artefacts recovered later.
Plus a few bits of Cretan art around the walls.
