THREAD: How do HK’s #HardHatRevolution protesters neutralize police tear gas? Last night’s clashes with police in Sheung Wan showed how protester “firefighter” teams work. Here they are in position towards the rear of the front lines & ready to mobilize. Note the traffic cones.
When tear gas shell comes in, they place a traffic cone on top creating a “chimney” to stop the gas spreading; then pour water into the chimney to douse the shell.
Here’s another example of that traffic cone chimney technique in action. (And then nonchalantly stroll away...)
If no traffic cones available then just water will do. At the start of this clip, red sparks where the incoming tear gas shell hits the road in front of me (!); protesters completely extinguish it with water moments later (+ featuring Tennis Racquet Guy).
Finally, if all else fails, just pick it up and throw it out the way (protesters wear heat-proof gloves so their hands are not burned).
