The social work profession calls for Social Workers to be advocates. I often hear from my colleagues say, “I’m just not really in to politics” or, “I’m not political.” Who taught you to think that you can’t, or shouldn’t, be political? That you don’t deserve a seat at the table?
Our profession was built on politics, on advocacy, on showing up for the dignity & worth of all, on creating programs that serve those who need it the most when there are no programs, & on creating legislature that enhances the well-being of all, especially those most vulnerable.
We learn about policies (good & bad) that impact those we serve & we abide by these policies to serve ethically & to the best of our ability. We know better than anyone what works, what changes should be made, & what doesn’t work because we see & navigate these systems everyday.
I am more than ready for Social Workers in office, at all levels. It is time we get back to our roots. Join me.
