A thread about coming back.
Around 2012/2013, I started running. I was slow and awful at first and eventually got slightly less awful. By the fall of 2015, I& #39;d run a bajillion 5ks, a few 10Ks, a dozen or so half-marathons, a few triathlons and a marathon. Then I hurt my knee.
It was shortly after we& #39;d moved here. I was training for the NYC Marathon at the time. (Didn& #39;t end up doing it.) I was running downtown, six or seven miles from home. I crossed the street, landed funny and that was it.
I figured I& #39;d just tweaked it. I& #39;d ice it rest a day and be back at it. But the wincing pain never really got better. I took longer and longer breaks. Eventually, I got scared to return, not only because I thought it would hurt, but because I figured I& #39;d "lost it."
I came back for a race or two. I ran a half marathon in 2016 and had to walk a few miles. And a 10k that summer was the nail in the coffin. I was done.
I missed it. You don& #39;t realize how much things like that become a part of your life. It& #39;s part of your identity, your routine. I wasn& #39;t even doing laundry as much. Everything was different.
I wallowed. Boy, have I wallowed. I& #39;ve tried to come back a few times, but nada. But today, I woke up middle fingers blazing to no one in particular. Why was I postponing joy? This morning, I ordered a new Fitbit. A small step. But lemme tell you, I was really good at Fitbit.
I was the person in your Fitbit feed with 100,000+ steps a week taking all the competitions. My wife and I had ours on at our wedding. But when I stopped running. I took the Fitbit off. What was the point?
But today, I ordered a new one. I will put it on, and it will not be like it once was, but it will be something new. And I am excited for something new. And after a few years of wallowing, that& #39;s enough. Baby steps, right?
So why the thread? Not sure. But if this is the day something flips, I& #39;ll be glad I marked it. Happy trails, friends. ;)
Starting...now
Week 1 Update: A far cry from my old days but a nice first week back. Coming for that #1 spot next week.
I haven’t updated this thread in a minute. I’m running outside again. And since daycare is closed, I’ve been running with the dogs. Finally ran fast enough to get Frankie tired.
