Every summer @RSABG offers Plant Conservation Internships. Field work and working with budding botanists are my favorite parts of my job. We are 1/2 way through the internship and the interns are learning more than plant skills. Here is a sample of our field adventures in 2019..
We have already learned several lessons in field safety. Like #1. Do not casually travel down unknown routes in hopes of a short cut. I should have know better and the road got dicey. We made it to our collection site, but 1 hour late. Lessons were learned...
Lesson 2. When friends doing field work are in peril you may be called into action if you are in a position to help. On field trip #4 we launched a successful rescue mission and helped @RSABG grad student @DylanHCohen get unstuck on a backcountry road.
Lesson 3. Things may not go as planned. Your proposed camping site may not what you imagined. Predownload maps and bring paper backups so you can navigate to an alternate spot in the backcountry. Saline Valley hot springs was a nice back up spot!
Lesson 4. Be prepared with extra water and food when conducting field work in the desert in July. Work in the early mornings to avoid the heat of the day, then take the afternoon off and explore the local sites! We are having a great time in the Amargosa monitoring niterwort!
Lesson 5. After hours trips may also pose some challenges. An after work excursion to Ash Meadows NWR presented us with a flat tire. Changing a flat in 106F heat in our rental and the logistics to follow has certainly been a learning experience for the interns!
We still have five weeks to go! More field work adventures are planned. I am convinced we have some future field botanists on our hands. Stay tuned...
Today I saw a traffic sign that indicated we might face a road closure. The interns laughed and said that I have a reputation for leading trips where things go wrong. 🤷🏽‍♀️I think they meant it in an endearing way. Thankfully no road closure and field trip was a success!
Most of our adventures have been from factors out of my control. Today we also had an adventure thrown our way when we got caught in a hail storm. I told the interns I aim for a diversity of memorable experiences. What will our next field trip bring?
Another day, another new adventure for me and the interns. Today we surveyed our local mountains for #monkeyflowers. We found them! But we also found not one, but two southern pacific rattlesnakes! We also came across a sweet garter snake on the trail.
The interns confirmed, it was the first rattlesnake sighting for each of them. They were excited! Doing field work brings such wonderful interactions with nature. I think this summer is one for the books. Also look at this champion #Diplacus johnstonii #monkeyflower #fieldwork
