The essence of happiness in my eyes is to be contended without making it dependent on the fulfillment of our desires. Our desires have no end, we can never chase them or hope to fulfill them. Every time we get what we want, we want something else and the cycle goes on and on.
So the idea of happiness which relies on our personal/monetary gains is flawed. If i base my happiness on them, i will surely find it really hard to stay satisfied. Our gains can never satiate us. We believe they can but the fact is, they never can.
That is why I think that happiness should actually be defined by the way we think. I will get to what I mean in a while. The idea behind writing all this is that lately I have seen people saying "Money can actually buy you happiness" and honestly at first, I felt I agreed too.
But no. It's a very unstable source to rely upon. It might get you a Lamborghini, a large house, a world tour or recognition or fame but does it guarantee that you will be satiated when you get all that? The billionaires of this world have enough wealth to last for centuries.
But they still keep going on for more. Every time we achieve something, we set another goal for ourselves, some another thing that starts to look like a source of constant happiness. This is how we are designed, we are not designed to stop.
A person who is not capable of seeing through this can never be truly happy. They will keep searching for newer things thinking that it's those things that hold their happiness and they will be disappointed every time.
Happiness is the state of our mind, how we think, how we perceive our surroundings, how we derive our inspirations and how we approach different circumstances. We often find people living on the streets happier than people living luxuriously, what is it that sets them apart?
A sound & healthy thinking approach.
Happiness is about being accepting of what you have in the present, cherishing it and doing what you can to sustain or improve your current position in life.
If we can't appreciate what we have now, we will never appreciate what we will have tomorrow. If we cant be satisfied with the blessings of today then we will never be satisfied with the blessings of tomorrow either.
We need to free ourselves from the cage of 'longing for something else' as if our life depends on it.
