research: deepfake — & we gon talk about it at a later date. stay woke.
Deepfake is a technique based on Artificial Intelligence that uses image recognition technology to transfer a persons face onto another.. using a collection of existing photos & videos, it creates a digital illusion; a video that appears real but is actually fake.
It’s no secret I’m pro-technology. I think we as humans have so much potential but often waste it on self destructive experiments. I can’t think of many examples of Deepfakes being beneficial to our society besides the fact our Sci-Fi films will be more realistic & enjoyable.
a user on Reddit named Deepfakes started uploading altered videos wit celebrity faces in porn. They also trolled Nicholas Cage by adding his face to random movies, fast forward a few years & now there are videos of politicians & influencers appearing to say things they never said
Not too long ago, snapchat & IG users discovered “Face Swapping” & causally swapped faces with their friends & family.. it seemed harmless.. an expensive Hollywood technology was made accessible for the general public. Most people were into it.. except for people like me & DMX.
Social media got ppl obsessed wit Filters.. in the early IG days, we had editing but limited features... it was mostly changing the tone of colors. Adding contrast for a darker black, brightness for yellows.. but now ppl are addicted to filters that make them appear cartoonish.
Changing the the shape of their face & eyes, making the skin smooth & a different tone, adding animated graphics like animal ears & digital sunglasses… sometimes, it reminds me of the way deepfake videos appear… bc I personally can still recognize a deepfake visual vs. real
But for those who have emerged into the Filter world, I believe they’ll be the easiest to deceive bc they’ve become accustomed to accepting a version of the Digital human & they may have their guards down.. which makes them more accessible to manipulation, which was the point.
Altho IG jumped on the wave quick, Snapchat started the real time filter trend. In 2015, Snapchat bought Looksery for $150million: a facial recognition start up that was started by an Ukrainian team. Russia? A year before election? Data!!
Most folks just agree to the terms & never consider just how much data & personal info & access they’re giving these apps... remember when Snapchat started that location feature that showed ppl exactly where you were? I made this thread https://twitter.com/torinickswho/status/877893674356531200?s=21
to make deepfakes, all u need is a few hundred photos of someone at different angles & the program will observe & apply it to the new body.. or if u have enough audio of someone’s voice, you can make them say whatever you want... if you’re not paying attention.. u might be fooled
I’ll finish this thread later.
