Kapil Mohan, former Chairman and MD of Mohan Meakin Ltd, is regarded as the ‘father of Old Monk’. Interestingly, he was a teetotaler and never touched alcohol. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2010, with the fourth-highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.
In the late 1820s, Edward Abraham Dyer, father of Colonel Reginald Edward Harry Dyer of Jallianwala Bagh massacre, moved from England to set up the first brewery in India (later incorporated as Dyer Breweries in 1855) at Kasauli in the Himalayas.
The Kasauli brewery launched India's and indeed Asia's first beer, Lion. Lion was much appreciated as a beer, and one famous poster featured a satisfied British Tommy declaring, "as good as back home!".
The brewery was soon moved to nearby Solan, close to the British summer capital Shimla, as there was an abundant supply of fresh springwater there. The Kasauli brewery site was converted to a distillery, which Mohan Meakin Ltd. still operates.
Another entrepreneur, H. G. Meakin, moved to India and in 1887 bought the old Shimla and Solan Breweries from Edward Dyer and added more. After the First World War, the Meakin and Dyer breweries merged.
and, in 1937, when Burma was separated from India, the company was restructured with its Indian assets as Dyer Meakin Breweries, a public company on the London Stock Exchange.
Following independence, Narendra Nath Mohan raised funds and travelled to London, where he acquired a majority stake in Dyer Meakin Breweries and built new breweries at Lucknow, Ghaziabad and Khopoli and the company name was changed to Mohan Meakin Breweries in 1967.
On the death of Mohan in 1969, his eldest son, V. R. Mohan, took over as managing director. under the leadership of Kapil Mohan (V. R. Mohan's brother). The word brewery was dropped from the name in 1982 to remove the impression that the company was engaged only in beer making.
Today, Mohan Meakin's principal brands are Old Monk Rum and Golden Eagle Beer. Its other products include Diplomat Deluxe, Colonel's Special, Black Knight, Meakin 10,000 and Solan No 1 whiskies, London Dry and Big Ben gins, and Kaplanski vodka. Asia’s original beer, Lion,
Coming back. Old Monk is a vatted Indian rum, blended and aged for 7 years (though there is also more expensive, 12-year-old version). It is dark, with an alcohol content of 42.8 (army issue alcohol content is 50%). Old Monk is also the third largest selling rum in the world.
Though it has always been massively popular, Old Monk has never been advertised. Old Monk has been the biggest Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) brand for many years, sold in five size variants: 180 ml (quarter / nip), 350 ml (half / pint), 750 ml (full / quart), 1& 2 -litre.
Apart from India, Old Monk is also exported to Russia, USA, UK, Japan, UAE, Estonia, Finland, New Zealand, Canada among other countries. Old monk is the most favourite brand of Indian Armed Force. Here is an interesting podcast to listen :

Sharing some Famous Experiments : Old Monk goes well with Coke and water: 60ml of Old Monk with 100ml water and 100ml Coke is the best combination. The beauty of this blend is that it doesn't dehydrate your body and tastes really good. Believe me, this is an all-season beauty.
Buy an Old Monk bottle. Open it, but don’t start making your drinks yet. Add a two-inch long Cinnamon stick and some cloves into the bottle. Keep it in a dark, cold place for the next three weeks. After 21 days of wait, a nice, heady aroma takes your rum to another level. Enjoy !
Fav one: No one wants a bad hangover. However, we do experience it. So, if you don’t have office the next day, mix 45ml of Old Monk with 60ml of dark filter coffee decoction. Add some warm water to the blend, if it is too strong for you. This is a tested formula, better try it.
Old Monk can shatter myths related to summer drinking. Many think rum is not for summer. It is wrong. All you need to do is fix yourself the right drink.
Take 60ml Old Monk, add one tablespoon of honey to it, and another of lemon juice. Throw in four-five mint leaves. Mix them properly. Fill a glass with crushed ice, pour the rich mix into the glass. Your drink is ready.
Old Monk is good news for those nursing cold or cough. Take 500ml water, and add into it one stick of cinnamon, 6-4 cloves, 1inch ginger and 10 black peppers. Now bring this mix to a boil and reduce to 400ml, add 90ml Old Monk into it. Soak in the warmth of this drink.
Take a half-filled glass of water. Pour Old Monk into it from the edges, slowly and smoothly so it doesn’t dissolve into the water. After pouring about 60-75ml Old Monk into it, you will find two separate layers in your glass. @jiji_b_tweets @sweetsoul_117 @Sea_wave24 That exp.
Part water and, up above, part rum. Just like the sun rising in the East. This is the perfect drink to get a sure high in the first attempt. Don’t shake the glass. Don’t mix it. Just have it pure. The first strong gulp of rum must be followed by water to take it easy.
If you're baking a plum cake or cupcakes with raisins & nuts,or even brownies and muffins, Old Monk is the best punch to tickle your tastebuds. The same goes for marinating mutton ribs for charcoal cooking. even lamb curry: to one kilo of lamb, add 60ml rum and 120ml red wine.
Remember : Old Monk Has Followers, Not Fans. Your Dream Girl Is The One Who Likes Old Monk. A Buddha Sadhu whose empty bottle is never to throw away. Done. Cheers everyone!
